The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Veterinary Technician around the country.
What We Do
The job of the veterinary technician is frequently confused with that of the veterinary technologist. Although both of these animal-based careers share some of the same or similar job responsibilities, such as a need to work under a veterinarian to test and diagnose illnesses and injuries in animals they are not actually the same occupation. In most circumstances, becoming a vet technician will require less education, and vet techs who work in laboratory settings are often responsible for feeding and caring for animals, alongside documenting their behavior.
Work Environment
Vet technicians can find employment in a range of different work environments associated with pet and animal care. These individuals most commonly find jobs in animal clinics and hospitals, as well as specialist animal care facilities.
How to Become a Veterinary Technician
The first step in becoming vet technician is earning your two-year associate’s degree in veterinary technology, or earning a bachelor’s degree in a related field. This education should prepare most students to understand the skills and knowledge required to work as a technician in a vet atmosphere. Alternative, an associate degree in animal science might also offer opportunities for employment as a vet technician. Some community colleges might require applicants to have at least twenty hours’ worth of observation experience within a veterinary hospital, alongside their high school diploma before they are allowed to enroll in an associate degree program for veterinary technology. After this, students will be able to complete a wide range of courses in their chosen field of study. Veterinary technology topics might include animal behavior, pharmacology, and animal diseases.
Training & Certification Requirements
Before you have the option to work as a vet technician in the United States, you will need to earn the correct credentials, including a license and certification. Each state has its own requirements for certification, as well as its own set of rules surrounding a credentialing exam, which might include practical, oral and written components. Most states will require individuals to take the national veterinary technician exam. If you want to work within a research facility, you might also earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
