Barnstable Oyster Season Opens Next Week: Here’s What To Know
One of the best parts about living in New England is access to fresh oysters right outside your door. The new season starts on Nov. 2.
BARNSTABLE, MA — Oyster season begins in Barnstable next week, and the town has released new details about what those looking to source fresh oysters themselves need to know.
Opening day for the 2022-2023 oyster season is on Nov. 2, and for those who want to throw the waders on and get in the water, you’ll need to acquire a recreational shellfish permit. For that application, click here.
The recreational harvest limit for oysters is one-half peck, or five quarts, per week. The minimum legal harvest length is three inches.

The season is set to close in Barnstable on April 1, 2023, officials said. This is also the end of the season for the Scudder Lane recreational shellfish area, which extends from the signpost near the beach house west of the Scudder Lane Landing to the Barnstable Yacht Club pier. It also extends to the Huckins Island tidal flat, officials said.
