How much does Aussie tennis legend Ash Barty actually earn?
By Bronte Gossling|
Aussie tennis star and all-round legend Ash Barty made history in 2022 by becoming the first local woman to win the Australian Open singles title in 42 years, a feeling she described as “unreal” and “incredible.”
The 25-year-old, however, is no stranger to breaking historic records in the sport, and last year’s performance at Wimbledon — where she became the first Australian woman to be a singles champion in 41 years since Evonne Goolagong Cawley — only serves as proof of that fact.
Her success on the court evidently pays off in spades, as, according to Forbes, she’s the eighth-highest paid female athlete.
The now-retired three-time grand slam champion, who announced her plans to step away from tennis in March, is worth an estimated US$6.9 million (approx. $9.8 million).

Throughout her whole career, it’s estimated Barty earnt a staggering US$24.6 million (approx. $32.9 million) in prize money, which, according to the Women’s Tennis Association, puts her at 17th place for all-time earnings worldwide.
The highest all-time career prize money winner, according to the WTA, is Serena Williams, who has earnt a total of US$94.5 million (approx. $134.5 million).
Barty also won her maiden Australian Open, which saw her have a partial claim on the tournament’s total $75 million purse, which sees men’s and women’s singles winners walk away $2.9 million richer.
Last year, singles winners scored a total of $3 million.

In 2021 alone, Barty made more money on the court than any other women’s tennis player, and at Wimbledon alone she scored over $3 million in prize money.
In 2020, however, despite her victories, Barty was also a demonstration in the pay disparities between men and women in tennis — when she won the 2021 Western & Southern Open title, she scored US$255,220 (approx. $362,580). At the same tournament, the men’s champion won US$654,815 (approx. $930,267).
Barty’s total net worth is divided between her winnings — US$3.9 million (approx. $5.5 million) — and endorsement deals — US$3 million (approx. $4.3 million).

The world no. 1 also signed a new sponsorship deal with Marriott International, adding the hotel chain to her list of sponsors, which includes Uber Eats, Jaguar, Head, Fila and Edgewell Personal Care. She also works with Bega Cheese’s Vegemite quite often.
Despite her immense personal wealth, Barty is quite modest with how she spends it.
In 2019, after winning the WTA Finals in China — where she took home the largest winner’s check in the history of tennis with $6.4 million in prize money — she said that aside from splurging on her niece and nephew, who were then aged three and two, her plans were quite low-key.

“Thankfully they can’t read but for Christmas they’re getting a new swing set, which they’re pretty excited about now that they’ve got the trampoline and swing set out the back,” Barty told the AAP.
“So, look, I mean the amount of zeros you have in the bank account doesn’t change how I’m going to spend my off-season and spend time with my family.
“Because that’s one of the biggest times that I miss throughout the year, is spending genuine time with them. It’s great that I can buy them things that they love but I live a pretty simple life. I’m not living an extravagant life.
“I’m pretty happy in my little house at home. I’ve got everything that I need. I’m pretty boring. I don’t really spend a lot on myself.”
