As a new month arrives in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so too do new bugs and fish. However, not only did June introduce new aquatic creatures like in previous months, but an entirely new type of aquatic creature. Now — for those not time travelling, at least — sharks inhabit the seas surrounding the islands of New Horizons players across the Northern Hemisphere. Among these is the largest known species of fish, the whale shark. While somewhat rare, players only need to know a few telltale signs in order to catch a whale shark of their own.
Finding a Whale Shark
Whale sharks can be found in the ocean beginning in June and lasting until September for those in the Northern Hemisphere. Southern Hemisphere players may have already encountered a whale shark, as they spawn there from December until March.
Whale sharks can be identified by a defining fin emerging from the water attached to the typical fish shadow. A fin doesn’t guarantee a whale shark however. The month of June introduced a host of new sharks, and in one case a fish with a fin that’s not a shark whatsoever.
Hammerhead sharks and great white sharks will appear in the same manner as the whale shark (though given that they sell for 8,000 and 15,000 Bells respectively, catching one of these instead of a whale shark is far from disappointing). The one finned creature that may indeed disappoint players looking for a valuable bounty is the suckerfish. Fortunately, the suckerfish can be differentiated from its brethren by the size of its shadow. True sharks will sport large-sized shadows while the suckerfish is a medium-sized creature.
What To Do With the Whale Shark
Right in between its hammerheaded and Jaws-starring compatriots, the whale shark will sell for 13,000 Bells at Nook’s Cranny. If you’re fortunate enough to have C.J. in town when catching a whale shark you can sell one to him for a total of 19,500 Bells.
Before selling off a whale shark, however, be sure to donate one to Blathers in the museum. He’ll inform you that the whale shark is the largest fish species in the world, and help you feel like a rockstar at virtual fishing.
