New model isn’t as good as the older one
Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019
I used my previous model for about three years with no issues – I only had to get a new one because I accidentally got liquid onto the scale and it ruined the LCD. This is the same brand and model that I had before, but:Likes: the larger LCD screen is definitely a plusNeutral: the platform portion is slightly smaller – doesn’t really affect me for my espresso measurements, though.Dislike: it’s twice as slow to register weight as the older model! No, I didn’t do any sort of scientific measurement for timing, it’s just from my daily use to measure out espresso that I realized that this is really slow to show the weight and I’ve been overgrinding coffee as it catches up. It’s not the end of the world and I’ve adjusted to how to use this one, but it’s just a slight first-world annoyance. I was going to return it, but for the price of this item and the shipping cost and hassle of going to the post office, I’m just going to keep it…I just won’t buy another one, though.

Amazon tells me that I purchased this scale 10 years ago. I still use it pretty much daily for measuring my coffee, but have used over those years for all kinds of miscellaneous purposes. The scale is accurate, but even more so, it is super repeatable. It never disagrees with previous measurements of the same/similar item. If a thing is 53.7g, then every other time you measure it…it will come up to 53.7g. Great for cooking, coffee, tea. Responsive. Money well spent.

(Update 1/9/12: this scale is great! Original set of batteries, 2x daily use @ work, and just as stable as I could hope for. But, funny enough, I have forgotten to take off the top cover maybe 3 or 4 times not only to get a funky reading. Wish my kitchen scale at home (referenced in my review) was this reliable!)
Some of my coworkers think of me as a coffee snob: I usually don’t like the bland roast that finds its home in our kitchen, instead preferring a dark and flavorful French or Italian. That’s why I use my Planetary Design French Press Mug to brew my personal stash, 18 fluid ounces at a time.
The reason I don’t call myself a coffee snob? Up to now, I’ve been using the ice cream scooper in the office kitchen to “precisely” (a-hem!) measure my grinds. That, I’m pretty sure, is an instant disqualification from any uppity coffee lovers society, and it’s also the reason why my brew was occasionally bitter and sometimes weak.
I’ve used a My Weigh 7001DX Digital Scale at home in the kitchen for a number of years to weigh out my coffee, and figured it was finally time to bite the bullet and do the same at work.
Requirements? I wanted the scale to be small, yet large enough for my 4″ diameter press pot, and have a high enough weight capacity to measure my press pot plus the coffee. Turns out this SC-2KG is spot on size wise with a 4″ square weighing surface, and just enough capacity to measure my press, the coffee, and even the water in it (if I was so inclined — though I’m not).
Protection is pretty good. A large tray is included, and a small snap-on platform cover mostly protects this scale (it’s not truly enclosed and sealed from dust, but it’s enough that it will survive getting banged around a little in my desk drawer or my soft-sided laptop bag.
The three buttons have a satisfyingly hard click when pressed, not the softer click of my 7001DX buttons that sometime require a little finesse to engage. The display comes on immediately (always with the blue backlight illuminated), and zeros quickly.
I appreciate that the feet of this unit are positioned such that hard button presses don’t cause the scale to tilt. I owned a scale that would do a nose stand when light pressure was applied to the buttons, and I even see this is a problem with a couple of American Weigh’s scales, after watching a handful of the calibration videos they’ve posted on their website.
The scale data refers to a 3 to 5 second stability time (in theory, the delay after adding weight to where the display indicates an accurate reading) and that seems pretty typical throughout their lineup. In fact, this is approximately the delay my My Weigh 7001DX at home exhibits, and it annoys me that my reading can jump around by 2 grams (or none at all), when I’m adding coffee.
But with this SC-2KG, that delay hasn’t been apparent. It might be because the grams display is in 0.1 increments (my 7001DX is in full gram increments) — so I can watch the scale “build up” to the next gram, vs. jumping ten tenths at a time. But in reality, I think it’s quite a bit faster at stabilizing than the claimed 3 second figure.
Repeatability is very good. My 500g calibration weight was dead on. I played around with some bananas and beer bottles (just because), and combining two separate items would get me to within 0.1g of the weight of the items’ individual weights added together — within the rounding error.
For my purposes, this scale is more than accurate enough. For the price, it’s phenomenal. Now excuse me while I go brew another cup of coffee.

I was sick of having so many question marks when dealing with the weight of small items. How many stamps do I need on this? Is the pinewood derby car up to weight? I’m thinking of buying product X which weighs Y, I wonder if that’s too heavy… how much does my similar product Z weigh? Is it cheaper to send this small package via USPS, UPS or FedEx? Their websites are great, if only I knew how much this weighed!?!
And I wanted something really accurate (from a household perspective) and I felt 0.1 oz wasn’t going to cut it. Enter this great scale for $20-$25 with 0.01 oz/0.1 gram accuracy. It’s answered many questions in the few weeks I’ve owned it with a precision that is more than good enough for my needs. A few notes:
1. Make sure you remove those pieces of cardboard that come between the scale surface and the platform and put it on a flat solid surface to get accurate readings.
2. The platform is smaller than the images make it appear. It works for the most part, but I’ve already had items that have stretched it’s capacity. The two trays that it comes with help a bit.
3. The placement of the LCD readout isn’t the best. If you’ve got an oversized item you’ll find the fact that the LCD is facing upwards towards the item with 1/4″ or so of clearance a bit of a pain. For the most part this can be worked around (tip: the display keeps the output for about a 1/4 second after you lift the item off) and if absolutely necessary a small mirror could see it.
4. I had planned to buy the appropriate calibration weights, but was frustrated they cost as much as the scale. However, I realized because the scale comes pre-calibrated, all one REALLY needs to do is validate that it is calibrated. So instead I bought a cheap set of calibration weights for sub $10 that weren’t the right weights for this scale. As long as the scale continues to read the right weights when I put those on the scale, I can have confidence I’m getting accurate measurements. If it ever gets out of whack then I’ll either replace the scale or consider buying the appropriate calibration weights. Just food for thought.
5. Along those lines, trying all kinds of different combinations, the scale always read the exact right weight for each calibration weight setup I used, down to the precision of the scale. So it truly was pre-calibrated and quite accurate. It also seemed very tolerant to where you placed the weight on the scale. You don’t need to accurately center it.
It would get 5 stars if it weren’t for it being a bit small and the LCD not being readable when looking from the front. Still gets 4 stars.

I bought this scale in 2014 when I was getting into coffee and boy is it one of the BEST things I bought for coffee.
I needed a way to weigh the beans & my pour over, and this is PERFECT for that. ACAIA makes great high-feature scales, but they’re super pricey, and most people probably don’t need that feature set. This is dependable and gets the job done.
I still use this exact scale for my home espresso set up. It fits perfectly under the grouphead and can withstand a good amount of abuse (hot water, coffee spills, etc) if you clean it.
But seriously… EIGHT YEARS of continual use. Daily coffee making. Traveling by car and plane. Water spills. Complete aeropress catastrophes. Falls off the counter… etc… And after eight years, it just now is starting to get finicky. Don’t get me wrong, it still works, but the buttons are a little less dependable now.
So I’m absolutely re-ordering another one. You cannot FIND a product these days that lasts eight years of daily use, much less for $35.

Best scales I have ever bought for coffee
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 5, 2013
Coffee geeks: this is your best option for weighing out beans. It fits an aeropress, just fits a clever dripper, although probably not a large Chemex.
Superbly fast, good repeatable results to nearest 0.1g, and goes up to 2kg which is quite rare for scales which measure to nearest 0.1g.
Great for baking as well, if you can find a bowl that fits it.
Love it very much.

It was defective and completely wrong out of the box. It was reading a 75g can of cat food as 14g or a 300g tub of cheese as 140g.
But even assuming it is normally accurate when not defective, the plastic guard is nonsensical and useless, given that you can’t access the buttons with it over the top.
In addition, the scale constantly jumps around even with nothing on it. It’s like the thing is getting phantom readings or something. Maybe this is part of the defect in my unit, or maybe it’s just a problem with the product in general. Either way, I don’t much care.
Definite return.

I like this scale for two main reasons
Reviewed in Canada on May 4, 2017
I like this scale for two main reasons: it’s small and it’s simple. I use it almost exclusively to measure my espresso grinds/shot and it works perfectly. It’s also nice and thin which is a bonus if you are using it for espresso because it will likely fit under the portafilter nicely (depending on your machine of course).
