The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were shutout Sunday night in a 9-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints. While shutouts happen all the time in the NFL, it was the first time in 15 years that a team led by Tom Brady was held scoreless.
The coach that stifled Brady? Current Alabama helmsman Nick Saban, who coached the Miami Dolphins from 2005-06 before joining the Crimson Tide. He beat the New England Patriots 21-0 Dec. 10, 2006, marking the last time that Brady was shutout.
The NFL Research Twitter account put that all in perspective with a few fun facts. Brady was 29 years old and in his sixth year in the league. No current defensive players had been in the NFL yet and legendary quarterback Drew Brees, who retired at the end of the 2020 season, was in his first year in the league.
Brady completed 26 of 48 passing attempts for 214 yards and one interception. The loss dropped Tampa Bay to 10-4. The Buccaneers failed to capture the NFC South division and dropped to 0-2 against New Orleans for this year.
“Yeah, we just didn’t execute great,” Brady said. “Tough night. Didn’t do much of anything right. Got to get a lot better. Got to get back to work. There’s a lot of football left and see if we can get a win next week.”
The Saints defense notoriously gave Brady a lot of fits in the past, and he was asked about it again following the shutout.
“They’re pretty good,” Brady said. “They got a really good defense, a really good scheme, really tough to go against. Well coached, a lot of great players, veteran players that have played with each other for a long time. They did a great job.”
Brady was asked if it was disappointing to not clinch the NFC South at home during a primetime game.
“Well, we just didn’t play well enough,” Brady said. “I think of it as one game and how we could win the game but obviously if you don’t score points, you’re not going to win. Tough night.”
Tampa Bay will have a good chance to clinch the division in the next few weeks, as it only needs to win one more game to secure the title and a playoff berth. The Buccaneers play the 5-9 Carolina Panthers twice — once at home and once on the road — and the 3-11 New York Jets to close out the year.

The Bucs have not won the NFC South since 2007, with all three other divisional teams winning multiple times since that point. Even so, they made the playoffs as a wild card team last season and won the Super Bowl to give Brady his seventh professional championship win.
