ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — In the midst of an epic collapse, Aaron Boone acknowledged prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Rays that the “outside noise” that’s been attached to it has gotten to his team.
“It’s a challenge,’’ Boone said of dealing with the fact the Yankees have become the talk of the sport for all the wrong reasons, with social media exploding with criticism of his first-place team.
“It’s been something I feel like has creeped in with these guys a little bit,’’ Boone said. “We’ve got to be able to fight through that.”
And if they do, Boone noted, “the noise changes the other way with performance. The good thing we try to remind guys of is they have the ability to change that. It’s not just wishful thinking with players that are not capable.”
Regardless of what the noise is, the Yankees entered Sunday having lost three straight and six of their last seven — and on the verge of suffering a disastrous sweep by Tampa Bay. It would cut their lead in the AL East to three games, and just two in the loss column.
Their once-powerful offense has become a shell of itself, with Anthony Rizzo out with a bad back, Andrew Benintendi on the IL with a right wrist injury that could cost him the rest of the year and everyone else not named Aaron Judge in a slump.
The prolonged struggles of the offense have caused the Yankees to adjust some of the ways they disperse information, but there’s only so much one can expect from a lineup that has Oswaldo Cabrera batting third barely two weeks after making his MLB debut and with just one hit in his previous 18 at-bats.
It comes a day after the manager said, “We’re as deep in the adversity as you can be [with] a couple of key guys going out; [we’re] in a stretch of losing baseball, all the [outside] noise [and] a lot of people are really mad. What’s our response? We’re in control of it, so it’s on us to go out there and do it.”
And they’re seeing not only the Rays climb up the standings, but the surging Mariners and Blue Jays also in the wild-card race, and the White Sox charging up the AL Central.
