DMX’s family have broken their silence to ask fans and followers for their prayers and support.
The 50-year-old rapper – real name Earl Simmons – went into cardiac arrest and was admitted to White Plains Hospital, north of New York City, according to his lawyer.
Lawyer Murray Richman was unable to confirm reports that DMX had suffered a drug overdose, and said he didn’t know what exactly had caused the heart attack.
He added that DMX is breathing on his own, and has been taken off a life support system.
Nakia Walker, DMX’s former manager, has since told that he is in a “vegetative state”, with “lung and brain failure.”
Now his family has shared a statement via People reading: “On Friday night … our brother, son, father, and colleague DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, was admitted to White Plains hospital, facing serious health issues.
“We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges.”
Due to Covid restrictions, the vigil was planned for this evening outside the hospital where DMX is being treated.
He was one of the most successful and influential rappers of the 1990s, but struggled with substance abuse.
In 2019, he cancelled two shows to check into a rehabilitation centre.
He broke through to the music scene in 1998, his first studio album, It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot, debuting at number one and spring boarding him into a prestigious career.
DMX boasts four other chart-topping albums, and three Grammy nominations.
Celebrity pals as well as fans have been pouring their hearts out for the star.
Missy Elliott asked for “prayers for DMX and his family”, while Gabrielle Union, Viola David and Ja Rule are among the other names sending kind words the way of DMX’s loved ones.
