A drive-in memorial service for Raymond Arnold Jr., a former NASCAR pit crew member and mechanic for Wendell Scott, one of the first black drivers in the series, will be held Friday evening at the Spartanburg County (Piedmont Interstate) Fairgrounds.

The service, open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. and people are asked to stay in or near their cars to watch tribute videos and hear speakers. There will be an FM radio station to broadcast the ceremony. Social distancing and mask-wearing will be enforced for those outside of their cars. There will not be food or bathrooms available.

A similar event is also planned at noon Saturday at the Pickens Speedway.

Arnold died July 7 at age 85. He was a Spartanburg resident who grew up in Wellford and following his racing career became a teacher, most recently at Eastside High School in Taylors until he retired.

Arnold first met Scott at the Spartanburg Fairgrounds in 1961, introduced by David Pearson. Arnold joined Scott’s pit crew and was with the team until 1973. Scott won a Grand National race in 1963, becoming the first black driver to do so at NASCAR’s highest level. He posthumously was elected to the NASCAR hall of fame in 2015.
