JELIVBERNS: An Ilustration of Efficiency in Storage If you have a storage shed, you’ve probably had to organize it a few times. After packing things into boxes and arranging them on a shelf, clutter tends to pile up until it needs sorting. Efficient packing is essential to making the most of your space. For a fun little Easter graphic, we’ll explore packing efficiency with jellybeans and painted, hardboiled eggs! Why Pack Efficiently? We’re sure you can think of plenty of moments when you need to pack efficiently! Instead of building a new garage, you should pack the one you have as best you can. When going on a long family vacation, you only have so much trunk space to Let’s get to the fun part! Below, we’ve calculated how many jellybeans or eggs could fit into the volume of all sorts of famous and A77 work with. If you’re a business, you always need to be efficient so that you understand your true costs and profits. common buildings and objects. When calculating with jellybeans and eggs, we used volume. Our formula looks something like this: 77 The Number of Objects in a Container = (Container Volume)*(Volume Fraction) / (Volume of 1 Object) What’s the Volume Fraction? The volume fraction, or packing density, is the percent of the container that is taken up by the objects within it; it’s what makes packing oddly shaped objects so tricky! There will always be some space between them. For example, all the tiny spaces between each jellybean in a jar might add up to 15% of the jar’s volume. We need to account for that! The Math You can do your own experiment at home with almost any object if you know the proper formulas. Here are the numbers and formulas we used: Jellybean Easter Egg Volume Fraction of an Egg =.64 or 64%. We used the volume fraction of a sphere for our hardboiled eggs. Volume Fraction of a Jellybean = .7 or 70%. Studies have shown that random close packing of spheres leads to a maximum volume fraction of approximately .64. Irregular spheres and cylinders, like M&Ms and jellybeans, can be packed more closely together because of their odd shapes. M&Ms have a volume fraction of .68, so we estimate that some irregularly shaped jellybeans would pack slightly closer together. Volume of a Hardboiled Egg = 62.35 cubic centimeters. Volume of a Jellybean = 3.53 cubic centimeters. A jellybean is a roughly cylindrical shape. The formula for finding the volume of a cylinder is h*n(r)° and the dimensions of our jellybeans were 1.5 cm in diameter and 2cm in height. We can convert cubic centimeters to any other measurement of volume with some simple math. We actually had to look this one up! It’s one standard deviation above the average volume of a domestic chicken egg, assuming that commercial eggs are, on average, larger than domestic chicken eggs. You can easily experiment with this at home. Get some water and measure it out into a measuring container. Note its volume. Then add a hardboiled egg to the water and measure its volume again. The difference between the two measurements, converted into cubic centimeters, is the volume of the egg.
