How to Perform a Fatal Blow

This page contains information and instructions on how to perform the Fatal Blow attack in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii and Skyward Sword HD on Switch.

One of Link’s most devastating moves, the Fatal Blow allows you to leap onto a vulnerable enemy and plunge your sword in – but it cannot be used in most circumstances. In order to trigger this move, specific criteria must be met, and specific inputs done either with motion or button controls:

Performing A Fatal Blow

• First, you must strike your enemy enough to knock them to the ground. Not every enemy can be knocked down in this fashion, and those that can usually need to be dealt a rapid amount of blows, knocked off balance with a shield parry, or hit with a spin attack early to cause them to fall onto the the ground and become vulnerable.

• After the enemy is on the ground, advance close to them using Z or ZL Targeting until you are in range. The words “Fatal Blow” should prompt you on the bottom of the screen when you are in range.

• For players using the Button Controls on the Switch version of the game, move your right control stick up, down, and up again to perform the Fatal Blow on your opponent.

• For players using Motion Controls either on the Wii or Switch, shake both Joy-Cons (or Wii-mote and Nunchuck) in a rapid up and down movement at the same time to perform the Fatal Blow.

Please note that many players have reported that both button and motion control inputs are finnicky, and you may not always get the desired result. It may take a bit of practice or the right distance to make sure it works more regularly.
