Draw a blurred outline for the face. The human head is never round but oval, similar to an egg, so sketch an oval that tapers downwards.

Draw the scaling lines. The easiest way to start drawing is to use dividing lines to outline the proportions of the face. First, draw a vertical line down the center of the oval, then continue to draw another line that divides the oval horizontally.

Draw the nose. Draw a horizontal line bisecting the lower half of the face. The intersection of the horizontal line and the vertical line is the position to draw the tip of the nose. Sketch the tip of the nose and the two sides of the nose.

Draw the mouth. Divide the remaining quarter into two parts. The line of the lower lip should be above the bifurcation line you just drew. Draw the line that separates the upper and lower lip, then draw the upper lip and complete the lower lip.
Draw eyes.

  • Draw two circles to create the eye shape on the horizontal line in the center of the oval. These two circles will be the eye sockets. The upper arc of the circle will be where the eyebrows will be drawn, and the lower arc will be where the cheekbones are.

  • Draw the eyebrow line following the upper arc.

  • The next step is to draw the eyes. In general, eyes are almond shaped, so you should keep this in mind when drawing your eyes (however, eyes come in slightly different sizes and shapes, so keep an eye out). As a general rule, the distance between the eyes should be equal to the length of the eye.

  • The pupil, the darkest part of the eye, will be drawn inside the black heart. Fill most of the pupil with black, leaving only a little white. Tilt the pencil horizontally close to the surface of the paper, polishing the background a little. Shade the inside of the eye with a medium to light shade, using short, closely spaced pencil strokes to fill from the contour of the pupil to the white of the eye. Paint lighter in a few places for a natural effect. Draw the eyebrows above. Now erase the outline below the eyes.

  • Continue drawing the eyelids above the almond shape. The lower rim of the eyelid will reach the inner black of the eye and partially cover the black.

Shade under the eyes. Now you can add a little shadow under the eyes as well as the junction of the eyes and nose to create the eye sockets. To draw tired eyes, buff and draw a few sagging strokes with a sharper angle on the lower eyelid.

Draw ears. The bottom point of the ear will be level with the tip of the nose, and the top point of the ear will be at the level of the eyebrow. Remember, the ears are usually close to the sides of the head.

Add details. Shade a little under the nose and contour the chin. Add expressive lines around the mouth and polish the corners, then outline the bridge of the nose. The more you highlight these lines, the “older” your face will look.
