Australia 14, Netherlands 7
Team Australia scored on its first possession of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics fifth-place game and never looked back, doubling up the Netherlands 14-7 Saturday (Aug. 7) at Tatsumi Water Polo Centre.
The Stingers tallied their first goal 15 seconds into their first possession and went on to lead 5-1 after the first quarter. Australia expanded its lead to 8-2 at halftime, and former Wolverine Amy Ridge helped push the lead to 11-4 at the end of the third quarter with her sixth goal of the Olympics.
Though the Netherlands chipped away at the Stingers’ lead in the fourth, Australia kept a comfortable lead to the final horn thanks in part to another former Wolverine, Abby Andrews, who scored her seventh goal of the Olympics to push the Aussies to 13. Ridge came back to score the final goal of the event for Australia, finding the back of the net with 18 seconds remaining.
