What does it look like? Other facts? No one really knows who discovered sulfur. Sulfur was known to the Chinese in the 6 th century BC in its natural form. In the 3 rd century the Chinese discovered how to isolate sulfur from the mineral, pyrite, (also known as fools gold). The Chinese began to use sulfur in medicines and it became apart of traditional Chinese medicines. By 1044 AD the Chinese used sulfur as a main component for gun powder. In 1777 Antoine Lavoisier determined that sulfur was an element and not a compound. It used mainly for fertilizers but is also used in gunpowder, matches, insecticides and fungicides. Sulphur crystals are commonly sort after by mineral collectors because of their bright yellow colour and polyhedron shape. Elemental sulfur can be found near hot springs and volcanic regions in many parts of the world. At room temperature sulfur is a bright yellow solid. Elemental sulfur only has a faint odor, similar to what matches smell like. People confuse rotten egg type smell of hydrogen sulfide with sulfur.
