Siamese fighting fish (English is Betta fish), also known as Siamese fighting fish, is a fish loved for its eye-catching colors and soft fluttering fins. However, when buying Siamese fish at an aquarium store, sometimes you don’t know if the fish is young or old. Check the size. Normally, an adult Siamese fish is about 7.5 cm long. You can apply a ruler to the wall of the tank and measure the length of the fish. If the fish is less than average in length, it is not yet fully mature. [1] X Research Source

  • It is difficult to measure the exact length of a Siamese. Usually you can estimate the length of the fish by applying a ruler to the glass of the tank. You need to be patient because healthy Siamese fish rarely stand still.

Check fish fins. Mature Siamese fish have beautiful fins, soft undulations. If this feature is observed, it could be a sign that the fish is mature. If the fin is small, it is immature or still a juvenile. [2] X Research Source

  • Identify the sex of Siamese fish. Female Siamese fish usually do not have the long and soft fins like the male fish.
  • Do not confuse natural fins with fins damaged by disease.
  • The Siamese Siamese already has fins that look like they’re cracked or “torn”.

The fins of older Siamese fish often wear out a lot. Fin tip may be slightly flared or slightly torn.

Assess the color of the fish. In general, young Siamese fish are often brightly colored, while older fish will have a slightly pale and dark color.

Note: Siamese fish are bred as pets with a wide variety of colors. However, wild Siamese Siamese are usually gray or dark colors, and see only a slight splash of color when they fight. [3] X Research Sources

Observe the changes in the body of the fish. You may notice that the color of the fish is getting a little lighter each day or that despite being fed regularly, the fish is still getting thinner and thinner. Those are signs that the Siamese is aging. [4] X Research Sources

Tip: As Siamese fish get older, their backs can also start to change. The back of old Siamese fish is slightly hunched, young Siamese fish often have a flatter back. The hump on the back of the fish is quite round, so don’t mistake it for a fish with spine disease

Notice the change in strength. Siamese fish will be less interested in spreading their fins as they get older. After many years, they don’t even want to spread their fins.

  • At the same time, the healthy adult Siamese will swim around the tank very energetically, while the old fish will often hide behind the plants and decorations in the tank and swim very sluggishly.
  • When feeding your Siamese, observe how quickly the fish finds food. Older Siamese may swim slowly and miss a few times before detecting food.

Watch for signs of dry cataracts in the ankles. Older Siamese eyes often appear “cataract”, which is a blur in the eye. This is normal when the Siamese is old and this will happen to the fish whether you keep it in a large tank or keep the water very clean.

Tip: Black eyes and hard to see are signs that it is a healthy adult fish. [5] X Research Sources
