Growing hyacinth in water (also known as hydroponics) is a beautiful method of growing plants, bringing color and fragrance to your home. Although it takes a relatively long time, hydroponics can keep hyacinths for up to several weeks. Ylang-ylang bulbs will give you fragrant flowers and range in color from pale pink to deep purple. A hydroponic bulb pot will keep the bulb above the water while allowing the roots to access the space and water needed for plant growth.
Steps
Chill the bulbs first
- Store flower bulbs in a dark place with a temperature between 1.7 and 4.5 degrees Celsius. Suitable places are refrigerators, warehouses, garages, even moist planting sand.
- Be careful when chilling flower bulbs in the refrigerator. Some fruits produce ethylene gas, which causes hyacinth bulbs to rot and/or become barren. Do not put the fruit in the refrigerator during the cooling process. [1] X Research Source
- Do not leave flower bulbs in freezing temperatures as they may spoil.
- Wear gloves when handling flower bulbs; hyacinth tubers can cause skin irritation. [2] X Research Source
- Refrigerated bulbs may be more expensive than unrefrigerated bulbs, but the time they save you is well worth it.
Planting hyacinth tubers
- You can also add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of activated carbon to the water to keep the water clean and clear.
- If you want the plant to bloom all year, you should plant the bulbs in soil instead of water. Hydroponic hyacinth bulbs will not bloom the following year, but soil-grown plants will.
Stimulate plants to bloom
- As mentioned above, do not keep hyacinth tubers in the refrigerator with fruit. Ethylene gas produced from fruit will damage flower bulbs. [7] X Research Sources
- Change the water in the tank twice a week. Clean water helps the hyacinth flowers to bloom to their full size and gorgeous. [8] X Research Sources
- Although the hyacinth needs to be moved to a brighter location, you need to avoid direct sunlight.
- To keep the flowers fresh longer, you can put the plant in the refrigerator at night.
- Enjoy the scent of flowers. When it blooms, it will give off a sweet fragrance.
- Throw away the bulbs when the plant is dead. Water-grown flower bulbs have used all the nutrients in the bulbs, and the bulbs will not be strong enough to continue flowering. You will have to buy flower bulbs to replant. [11] X Research Source
