Junk files (or “junk files”) are usually files that your computer creates during installation of applications, launching updates, and many other tasks. Junk files can also be files that you have deleted but are still in the recycle bin. Because junk files are not automatically deleted, they can take up hard drive space and slow down your computer. Check the box next to the files you want to delete. For example, you can select “Recycle Bin” to delete deleted content but still in the trash, or select Downloads to delete all files located in the Downloads folder.

  • Before cleaning out the Downloads folder, check to make sure you’ve moved any important files away. For example, a PDF file that you downloaded from an email sent from your boss, or an important image. To move a file out of the Downloads folder, navigate to that folder in Finder, click the folder, and then click Move to near the top of the File Explorer window. Then, select the folder you want to transfer the file to from in the drop-down menu.
