To label a face on Google Photos (Google Images), you need to click or tap in the search box and select the face. Then enter a name so you can easily find this person’s photo on Google Photos. You can also change the label name, remove photos from the label, and group similar faces into the same label at any time. There is also a feature to hide certain faces from search results. Learn how to use Google’s Face Grouping feature to improve search results on Google Photos.

You need to make sure that the Face Grouping feature is turned on. Otherwise, you won’t be able to group by face. [1]

  • Tap the ☰ menu and select “Settings”.
  • You need to make sure that the “Face Grouping” switch is in the On position. You can also disable this feature at any time.
  • Click the arrow to return to the Photos screen.

Click the search box. The search menu will expand with a row of options including many small face images.

Click the arrow to the right to see all faces. You will see all faces recognized by Google in the image.

Tap a face to label it. A new screen will appear with the person’s face at the top, below the words “Who is this?” (Who is this?).

Enter or select a name. Because the label is only used to aid in image search, no one will see this name but you.

Click the search box. If this person has more than one face icon, you can combine them by labeling them the same. The face icons will continue to appear.

Tap the label in the search results. A dialog box will pop up asking “Are these the same person?” (same person or different person). All of this person’s faces will appear right below the question.

Click “Yes” (same person). So all faces will be tagged the same, and when you search for this tag, the Google image associated with all face symbols will appear in the results.

  • You may need to repeat this process several times with the same person.

Label your face on the website

Go to http://photos.google.com . You can use Google’s Face Grouping feature to tag similar faces and find photos by their name. If you’re not signed in to Google Photos, do so now.

You need to make sure that the Face Grouping feature is turned on. Before you can label and aggregate similar faces, Face Grouping must be enabled and available in your region. [3]

  • Click the “…” menu on the left side of the screen.
  • Click on “Settings”.
  • You need to make sure that the “Group Similar Faces” switch is in the On position. If you don’t see this option, Face Grouping isn’t available in your country.
  • Click the browser’s back button to return to the photo gallery.
