The chassis number is the last six characters of the vehicle’s vehicle identification number (VIN), so you need to find the VIN to identify the chassis number. Cars and motorbikes often have their VINs marked in different places, so the location you need to look for will depend on the available vehicle. Check the driver’s side door. The VIN number can be located on the door post or the door frame stand. Open the driver’s side door and look at the edges of the door frame for a small white sticker.

  • If the VIN is on the door sill bar, look in the area below the rearview mirror.
  • The VIN may also be located on the opposite side of the door frame stand, near the driver’s seat belt buckle.

Check the chassis. Sometimes the VIN is marked on the front of the chassis, somewhere near the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Go to the front of the car, open the bonnet, locate the windshield washer fluid reservoir, close the bonnet and check the chassis near this area for the VIN.

Look underneath the rear fender. Another spot you can check is under the rear fender. Get around to the back of the car, crouch close to the ground, and look under the fenders. Check both sides to see if the VIN is highlighted here.

You can find the VIN by turning the handle to the side and looking at the neck of the vehicle. VIN numbers are usually engraved on metal. [1] X Research Source

  • You may need to check the sides of the car’s neck to find the VIN.

Observe the front frame. For ATVs and some other motorcycles, the VIN may be hidden in the frame. Take a flash and look around to find the VIN marked on the chassis inside the car.

  • Check the outer frame first. The VIN can be marked just below the gear lever located on the left side of the vehicle. After looking at the entire outside of the chassis and still can’t find it, start checking the interior of the chassis. [3] X Research Sources
  • Some manufacturers mark the VIN in a specific place on the chassis. For example, Honda often marks the VIN on the right side of the front of the car and the chassis just above the left side of the engine. Ask the manufacturer what specific parts you need to look out for in order to find the VIN.

Don’t forget to circle the last six numbers. The last six digits of the VIN are the motorcycle chassis number. Circle these six letters to identify the chassis number. Note: for most motorcycles made in Vietnam, the VIN number is also the chassis number.
