The scab is a protective covering on the surface of a wound, made up of dried blood, plasma, and immune cells. Since it has the function of protecting the wound, you should not use force to pry this scab. Scaling can cause irritation, slow healing, and put you at risk of infection. Removing the scabs from acne is also very difficult, trying to pry them off early will increase the risk of scarring. The bottom line is that you need to keep the scab soft, moist, and supple, and stimulate the growth of the young skin underneath. If you have acne scars, you can apply different methods to help the wound heal faster, but you should note that acne needs to go through a healing process before it disappears.

Wash the scabs every day. You should wash the scaly area twice a day, using a cleanser made for acne-prone skin or a mild cleanser. After washing, gently wipe dry. [1] X Research Source

  • You need to use a clean towel each time you wash the scales. Reusable towels will spread bacteria and slow down the healing process.

Wash with oil. After washing with soap, you can add an oil to help moisturize and remove flakes. You can choose from several oils like beaver oil, coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil and others. Using a clean washcloth, gently dab the oil onto the scabs. You try to be light and just apply a little pressure. Rinse thoroughly then moisturize again. [2] X Research Source Bedi MK, Shenefelt PD. Herbal therapy in dermatpogy. Archives of Dermatpogy. 2002 Feb 1.138(2):232-42.

  • Washing with oil will help remove some small flakes. However, you should only remove small pieces that can come off easily. Don’t try to pry them off.
  • The scab will fall off within five to seven days. Some may peel earlier or later, don’t try to force them to come off prematurely.

Hot compress. You dip a cloth in warm water and roll it up, apply it to the acne scab twice a day, for 10 to 15 minutes each time. The hot and humid steam will soften the scabs, thus helping them to peel off safely, naturally, and also helping to heal the wound. [3] X Research Sources

  • Do not rub when applying. You should only apply and hold the towel over the scab.

Bath with Epsom salts. Soaking in a bath with Epsom salts helps to moisten the scabs on the body and stimulate wound healing. You mix warm water and Epsom salt into the bath, soak the scaly area for about an hour. [4] X Research Sources

  • Repeat every day until the scab is gone.
  • Be careful not to put Epsom salt on your face.

Find psyllium leaves. Plantain has flat, long, small leaves, and grows everywhere including in the yard. There are different types of plantain, but they all have vertical veins. [5] X Source of Research Many people think of plantains as weeds, but they have a lot of medicinal properties. Plantain can be applied directly to the wound to protect and stimulate the healing process. [6] X Research Source Bedi MK, Shenefelt PD. Herbal therapy in dermatpogy. Archives of Dermatpogy. 2002 Feb 1.138(2):232-42. Plantain leaves also have antibacterial properties.

  • In the United States, many people do not realize that the tree that grows in their yard is plantain, because the tree has the same name as a banana-like fruit. Psyllium leaves are used as medicinal herbs different from the fruit also called plantain. [7] X Research Sources
  • If fresh psyllium leaves are not available, you can order dried plantains and herbs from herbal stores. You can also buy pre-refined psyllium ointments and lotions.

Make cream from fresh plantain leaves. You pick 10 fresh plantain leaves, boil slowly with about 2.5 cm of water until the leaves are soft. Take out the leaves, use a small spoon to tilt it, then let it cool. [8] X Research Source Bedi MK, Shenefelt PD. Herbal therapy in dermatpogy. Archives of Dermatpogy. 2002 Feb 1.138(2):232-42.

  • After the mixture has cooled, add a few drops of essential oils of your choice. You can choose from almond oil, castor oil, or mineral oil.
  • You can use dried plantain leaves, mixed with essential oils and boiled to make a topical cream.
