If your keyboard does not type the correct characters, the input language may not be selected correctly. Modern operating systems come with input in multiple languages, and if multiple language modes are enabled, it’s easy to accidentally switch between them. If you use a laptop with a touchpad, the NumLock key could be the culprit.

Check the NumLock key. Many laptops only activate the numeric keypad when the NumLock key is enabled. Press NumLock or Fn + NumLock to make sure the key is disabled. Switch between keyboard layout templates. If you install more than one keyboard layout and need to use different keyboard styles, you can change it quickly. There are two different ways to do it:

  • Click the Language button in the System Tray and select the language you want to use. This feature appears when you install more than one input language or keyboard.
  • Press ⊞ Win + Space to cycle between the input languages and keyboards you have installed.

Set the preferred default language. If there is more than one language here, the wrong language may be selected and cause the keyboard to not function properly. Select the language that you want to use as the default input language and click the “Set as default” button.

Remove keyboard layouts you don’t want to use. If there are multiple keyboards listed in the “Keyboards” section, delete the model you don’t use. This will ensure that only the correct layout is selected.

  • Click an installed keyboard that you want to remove and click the “Remove” button.
  • Keyboards with patterns other than “QWERTY” often result in incorrect characters appearing when keys are pressed.
