It can be difficult to order a ring because you don’t know your ring size for sure. Salespeople can help you find the most accurate measurements, however, it’s not always convenient to meet with them. Fortunately, you can measure yourself accurately at home. Measure your finger with a soft tape measure and convert that measurement using a ring or ruler size spreadsheet. Also, if you already have a ring that fits, the process will be even easier. You can find out your ring size by comparing the ring you have with the ring size chart.

Wrap a soft tape measure around your finger. Wrap tightly with knuckles. This is the largest finger segment and the ring will have to go through it easily. In general, putting on and taking off your ring should not cause you any pain. Get a cloth or plastic tape measure for the most accurate measurements. You can use a metal ruler, but wrapping it around your finger is much more difficult and can cause injury.

  • To make it easier to measure, find a ring gauge from a jewelry store’s website and print it out. You can use it just like you would with a tape measure, except that the unit of measure will be ring size, which means you won’t have to convert units anymore.
  • Do not wrap the paper too tightly. Measure for a snug yet comfortable fit.
  • Interesting information: the fingers on two hands, even in the same position, will have different sizes. Measure the finger on which you intend to wear the ring. For engagement rings, you should measure the ring finger on the left hand, not the ring finger on the right hand. [1] X Research Source
  • Your finger size will change during the day. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? For best results, measure at the end of the day. [2] X Research Source

Record the measurement where the tape measure intersects. You should use a piece of paper and a ballpoint pen or pencil. You can use either inches or millimeters, depending on the store you intend to order from. Many places will use both measurements, but if in Europe, they will probably only use millimeters.

  • If you are using a ring gauge, mark the intersection directly on the ruler.

You can find this table on the website of many jewelry stores. If you want, you can print it out for ease, but this is not necessary. This table will convert the finger size measurement to the ring size; for example a 2.34” (approximately 59.5mm) measurement would be equivalent to a size 9 ring.

  • If your measurement falls between two ring sizes, choose the larger size.
  • If using a ring ruler, mark the intersection of the rulers to find your measurements.

Use round ring size chart

Find and print the ring size chart. Many online jewelry stores have this type of board that you can print out, showing the number of circles in different sizes. [3] X Research Source For more accuracy, you should look for the measurement chart of the store where you intend to order the ring. This will ensure the size on the chart matches their product size.

  • A resized gauge will result in incorrect measurements, which means the ring you ordered may not fit. To avoid this, you need to make sure the printer’s alignment feature is disabled.

Find a ring that you already have and should fit the finger you plan to measure. Choose a ring that fits well – snugly on your finger but not too tight. Make sure the ring fits the finger you want; Your two ring fingers can both be different sizes!

Place that ring in the circles on the measuring board. The circles will fit inside the ring, and that will be the perfect measurement. [4] X Research Source If your measurement falls between two ring sizes, choose the larger size.
