This wikiHow teaches you how to turn content on your computer screen (from the desktop to games and programs) into video. You can do this using OBS Studio on a Windows computer, or QuickTime – the built-in video player on Mac computers. If you have the Creators Update version of Windows 10, you can also use the Game Bar to record videos in action on games and apps.

Download screen recording software. Open Broadcast Software (OBS) Studio and Bandicam are popular choices. Because Windows computers do not have a built-in screen recording utility, you need to install specialized software if you want to record a video of your desktop screen or multiple programs running at the same time.

  • If you just want to record a video of an app or game, you can use the Game Bar app on the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Install OBS Studio. Double-click the OBS Studio installation file (located in your browser’s default download directory), click Yes when prompted, click Next , click I Agree , click Next. , uncheck the plug-in box if you don’t want to install OBS for your browser, and then select Install .

Click Yes on the “Auto-Configuration Wizard” window. Another window will appear. To complete the setup, you:

  • Check the box “Optimize just for recording”.
  • Click Next
  • Click Next
  • Click Apply Settings
  • If you want to set it up yourself, click No .

Add desktop as source. Click the + sign under the “Sources” heading, click Display Capture or Game Capture , click OK at the bottom of the “New Capture” window, and select OK at the bottom of the next window.

Click Start Recording . The option is in the lower right corner of the OBS Studio window. OBS Studio will start recording the video content on the screen.

Fix “Failed to start recording” error on OBS Studio if necessary. Sometimes you will see “Starting the output failed. Please check the log for details” error pop up. To fix this, do:

  • Click OK on the error message.
  • Click Settings in the lower right of the OBS Studio window.
  • Click Output in the upper left of the Settings window.
  • Click the “Encoder” drop-down box.
  • Click Software (x264) in the drop-down menu.
  • Click Apply , then click OK

Type quicktime into Spotlight. The QuickTime application will be found on Mac computers.

Click the red and silver circular “Record” button at the bottom of the Screen Recording bar. The screen selection frame will appear.

  • You can also click the ∨ sign to the right of the screen video recording button to bring up a drop-down menu with options for microphones as well as the ability to enable/mute clicks in the recording.

Click anywhere on the screen. QuickTime will start recording the video content in full screen.

  • Or, you can drag the selection frame to limit the portion of the screen you need and then click the “Record” button again to record only the specified portion of the screen.
  • To stop recording, click File on your Mac’s menu bar, then choose Stop Recording in the drop-down menu.
