Planting grass is a time-consuming business, but the payoff is well worth it. A green lawn is extremely attractive. It provides fresh air for everyone as well as a healthy playground for the kids. Choose the grass variety that best suits your yard.

  • Different types of grass have different climate and environmental needs. Some are shade-loving, and some should be planted in a sunny place. There are varieties that grow well in warm weather, and there are varieties that like cold climates.

Use a soil test kit to check nitrogen, phosphorus, pH and other substances in the soil. This will help you determine if the soil is lacking in nutrients.

  • You may need to use some stimulant products. These products are available at garden stores.
  • Adequate supply of nutrients is very important for the lawn. Depending on what nutrients the soil is lacking, you can improve the problem by using fertilizers, which will release nutrients over time.
  • You don’t need to use harmful chemicals to enrich the soil. Humus and decomposed organic matter are resistant to weeds, insects, and diseases, especially if you use vigorous native plants.

Water the lawn every morning at the same time. If you have recently planted seeds, make sure to water them regularly every day.

  • The best time to water is early in the morning. At this time, the wind is light, the water will be less evaporated. Watering during high winds can cause the grass to dry out before the water can penetrate the soil.
  • For green grass, you should water until the water penetrates into the soil at least 15 cm.
  • In the summer, make watering part of your lawn care routine. You may need to water more at other times of the day to keep the grass from drying out.
  • The grass needs to be irrigated with about 2.5 cm of water per week. If using a sprinkler, place a can in the yard to measure the amount of water in the can after opening the sprinkler for about an hour. From there you will calculate the rate of watering per hour when using a lawn sprinkler device.

Mix one cup of ammonia (a source of nitrogen) and one cup of epsom salt (magnesium sulphate compound) in a bucket with 19 liters of water, then use a spoon to water the mixture evenly on the lawn. Nitrogen promotes greener leaves, and magnesium sulphate helps leaves retain water, so the grass will look thick and green. After watering this mixture on the lawn, dig the soil to help the chemical penetrate deep into the roots. This method is very effective and the cost is also lower than using nitrogen-based fertilizers.

Cut grass 1 day after watering. Grass will heal better from cuts. This also prevents the tips of the grass from turning brown.

Mowing the lawn at least once in the spring and once in the fall to keep the grass green. This process creates many small holes in the surface of the lawn, allowing water, nutrients and air to reach the roots more easily.

  • The tillage reduces the strength of the stream and draws water more efficiently.

The best way to prevent weeds is to plant more grass with seeds. The thick layer of grass will overwhelm and make it difficult for weeds to grow or spread on the lawn.
  • Advice

    • Another alternative method is to “paint” the lawn. While this may sound like a strange idea, it is slowly gaining popularity, especially in the state of California (USA) and some famously arid regions such as Western Australia. They use a non-harmful plant dye to spray the grass and immediately, the lawn will be green again. Currently, this method has not been applied in Vietnam.

    Warning

    • For some geographic areas where grass is susceptible to disease, growing and caring for a green lawn can be very difficult. If conventional methods don’t work, you should consider hiring a local lawn care service to inspect your yard and find a fix.
