Exploiting available eBook repositories

Start the application and prepare to mine. Suppose you have installed FBReader on your computer running GNU/Linux Ubuntu as described in the article ‘Installing FBReader to read e-books’.

  • To be able to work with FBReader, first start it by clicking the E-book reader icon on Ubuntu’s start bar. Once FBReader has been opened, click the Search Network Libraries button.

    • Feedbooks OPDS Catalog [1] X Research Sources . OPDS stands for Open Publication Distribution System , which in Vietnamese means Open Publication Distribution System . There are hundreds of OPDS Catalogs [2] X Research Resources on the Internet that you can search and dig into.
    • Kataлoг LitRes [3] X Research Sources . This is a repository of Russian books.
    • Manybooks Catalog [4] X Research Sources . This is an eBook store that is taken as an example shown below.
    • Shucang Catalog . This is the Chinese language e-book store.
    • Smashwords [5] X Research Sources . This is a free eBook site by independent authors.

Open/Close Catalog. To Open/Close a Catalog, click on the Expand / Close Catalog link phrase located below the name of each respective Catalog.

Exploit the Manybooks Catalog . Click the Open Catalog link at the bottom line of Manybooks Catalog . You will see Manybooks Catalog categorized by 4 criteria with accompanying descriptions:

  • New Titles – New titles. These are the recently added books.

Search and download selected books

Search catalogs on the Internet. In addition to the catalogs listed by default when opening FBReader, you can search and explore hundreds of catalogs available on the Internet. Below is an example of searching the Gutenberg Project’s free eBook repository.
  • Search and download the Gutenberg Project eBook on FBReader. Assume your computer is connected to the Internet. Do the following:

    • Search books. Type the term Gutenberg Project in the search field and then press the Enter key. Wait a moment for the program to search and give results, as you can see in the illustration.

    • Select books to download. Suppose that in the list of books returned after a search, you want to read a book by Eric S. Raymond called The Cathedral and the Bazaar. Click the Show Book link directly below the title.

    • Click the Download link below the book title and icon to download it to your computer. Wait a moment for FBReader to download the selected book and you will see the front page of the book with the book being added to your personal library in FBReader, as shown in the illustration.
