Thermal control is a very important part of computer setup and maintenance. Extreme heat can be a death sentence for sensitive components, especially when you’re overclocking. And to cool the computer, first of all, you need to know how to apply thermal paste.

Choose a good thermal paste. Most basic glues contain silicon and zinc oxide. More expensive products have thermally conductive components such as silver or ceramic. Although a thermal paste containing silver or ceramic is more efficient at transferring heat, a basic thermal paste should suffice.

Clean CPU surface and heatsink. Use a cotton ball or cotton swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the surface of the CPU and heatsink. The higher the alcohol content, the better. 70% is good enough but 90% is even better (if you earn it).

Smooth the surface of the heatsink and processor if necessary. Ideally, these two contacts are completely flat and really don’t need thermal paste. If the base of the radiator is rough, you can wet sand it with fine sandpaper to handle it. Unless achieving optimal cooling performance is your goal, you don’t necessarily need to take this step.

Attach the heatsink to the processor. Straighten the heatsink to the processor in a balanced manner. At this point, the thermal paste will spread itself all over the contact surface, creating a thin and even layer of glue, filling all gaps and leaving no residue on the surfaces.

  • When exposed to heat, the glue will spread thinner and wider towards the edge. Therefore, using a small amount of thermal paste is very important because of the effect it brings.

Avoid removing the radiator after it has been installed. It is difficult to check whether the thermal paste has been applied correctly. Glue the base of the heatsink. With a square base heatsink, applying glue will be a bit more difficult because if you just put a drop of glue on the surface and press the base down, the glue will not cover the entire contact surface. The methods being applied are quite diverse. Here, we will only cover a few of the most popular methods:

  • Straight line method – Apply two thin, parallel strips of thermal paste onto the base of the heatsink. The space between them should be one-third the width of the processor. The strips themselves should be approximately one-third the width of the processor.
  • Cross Method – This method is quite similar to the above method, except that the intersecting bands form an “X” shape instead of parallel. The length and thickness of the strips are constant.
  • Spread Method – The most popular and effective, this method takes a little more work. Here, we will put a small amount of thermal paste on the base of the radiator. Put on a plastic glove or plastic bag and spread the glue evenly over the surface with your fingers. Do not forget to glue the entire surface in contact with the microprocessor and make sure that the glue is not too thick. In most cases, the glue should be just enough to cover the metal underneath.

Install a heatsink. With the first two methods, you need to install straight down in a balanced way to ensure that the glue will spread over the entire surface. With the latter method, you MUST slightly tilt the radiator when installing to prevent the formation of air bubbles. That’s because usually, the thermal paste is spread too thin, not preventing the formation of air bubbles when applied.

    • Only a thin layer of thermal paste should be used, thick glue will reduce the heat transfer rate. Thermal paste is used to fill the gap between the chip and the heatsink as well as the tiny bumps on their surface.
    • If you’re using rubber gloves to spread the thermal paste, make sure they’re powder-free. When the powder adheres to the thermal paste, the heatsink will be seriously degraded.
    • Do not touch the surface with bare hands after cleaning with alcohol. There is oil on the fingers and it will damage the contact surface as well as the heat sink.
    • Don’t forget that usually thermal paste has a so-called “test run time”. During this time, the glue becomes more effective and continuously lowers the temperature. Sometimes this time is very short but more often it can be up to 200 hours.

    Warning

    • Using oil-based cleaners to clean contact surfaces can have a terrible impact on radiator performance. They soon and forever fill in the void that should have been filled with thermal paste, not letting the thermal paste do its job. When you clean the surface with an oil-based cleaner and then apply thermal paste on it, the radiator will never work properly.
