Place 1 tablespoon (15ml) of shea butter or coconut oil in a small saucepan. You can use twice as much ingredients if you want to make more lipstick. You can also use a water-bath steamer, which has a steaming rack placed on top of a pot below that holds boiling water. Be careful not to let the water in the pot reach the bottom of the steamer rack. The steamer will help the oil or butter heat up slowly and not burn. [1] X Research Source

  • You can also put the ingredients in a heatproof bowl and heat in the microwave.
  • Shea butter has a better moisturizing effect because it contains vitamin E, but coconut oil is also very moisturizing.

Melt the shea butter on the lowest heat. Since you only use a very small amount of shea butter, it burns very easily. When heating butter, watch carefully and keep the heat as low as possible. Don’t let the butter or coconut oil bubble, just let them melt. [2] X Research Source

  • If using a microwave, start cooking for about 10 seconds then check, stir, and cook for another 5 seconds.

Add 1 tablespoon (15ml) of raw honey and 4-5 drops of essential oil. Remove the shea butter from the heat and wait 2-3 minutes for the butter to cool. Add honey and essential oils, stir until they are combined. [3] X Research Sources

  • You can use menthol, rose, or citrus oils.
  • If you don’t want to use honey, you can use castor oil, a vegetable oil, in an equivalent dose. Honey has a moisturizing and exfoliating effect on the lips; Castor oil is very hydrating and helps relieve dry lips.
  • Instead of using essential oils, you can add a little cinnamon powder to your lipstick.

Melt 2 tablespoons (30ml) of coconut oil in the microwave. Start cooking for 15 seconds, if the oil is still not melted, cook for about 5 more seconds. Coconut oil needs to be hot enough to melt and activate the gelatin. They will not fuse together if they are still solid. You can also use coconut oil and petroleum jelly in equal proportions. [5] X Research Sources

  • You should stir gently so that the coconut oil dissolves evenly. [6] X Research Source
  • Coconut oil has a moisturizing effect, while petroleum jelly helps lock in moisture very well.

Mix in 2 teaspoons (about 6g) of gelatin powder of your choice. Add the flour while the oil is still hot and stir. The heat will melt the gelatin and help the lipstick solidify well. [7] X Research Sources

  • You can use any flavor you like, but be aware that gelatin will give the lip balm a slight tint. Raspberry, cherry or strawberry flavors will create a rose-red color. If you want to be a little different, you can use grape flavor for a purple lip balm or use blue raspberry for a bright blue lipstick. If you want to make a colorless lip balm, use unflavored gelatin.
  • You can also use unsweetened gelatin, but use a little less. Try it out to find the right dosage!

Place castor oil, shea butter, and coconut oil in a small saucepan. You will use castor oil and shea butter 1 tablespoon (15ml) each, 2 tablespoons coconut oil (30ml) and pour it all into a saucepan. [10] X Research Source

  • If desired, you can replace castor oil with petroleum jelly in equal doses. Oil wax has a good moisturizing effect, castor oil works to overcome chapped lips or lack of water. Both shea butter and coconut oil are moisturizing, but shea butter also contains vitamin E, which is great for the skin.
  • If you don’t want to use shea butter, you can increase the amount of coconut oil.
  • You can also heat these oils in the microwave, if so, pour them into a microwaveable bowl.

  • Clove oil and cinnamon essential oil are also very fragrant, but you should only use a few drops. These essential oils have a strong odor very quickly and have a warming effect on the lips.
  • If you don’t have essential oils, you can use 1/4 packet of fruit powder, such as Kop-Aid or Crystal Light, to add color and flavor to your lipstick.
  • For a natural color, add ¼ teaspoon (1.5g) of beetroot powder.
