How to Patch Socks

Housekeepers usually know how to patch socks because it’s part of their job, and we may not know how to patch socks properly. So what to do if one of your favorite socks is torn and you don’t want to throw it away? This article will show you how to fix the problem.

Select only. You will need to choose only the color and thickness of the sock to be patched. You can use dark thread for the horizontal stitch and light thread for the vertical stitch. If you have dark socks, using white thread will make it easier to see what you are doing. Similarly, you will use black thread on white socks. Thread the needle. Besides using knitting needles, you can use any regular needle. You will thread one or two threads into the needle depending on the thickness of the sock. Insert the needle into one end of the tear hole. Now you will make a big stitch to the other side of the hole. The next stitch is the most basic of the stitches. You can also choose to sew several next stitches on the top and one side of the hole. This will strengthen the seams you are about to make to patch the tear and help secure the thread around the tear (which is very thin and could create another tear).

Repeat the stitches. You will need to bring the stitches up and across the hole, passing the needle back and forth a few times until the hole is closed with parallel seams.

Now sew the seams perpendicular to the parallel seam (optional). Sewing lines that are perpendicular to the previous seam will secure the patch you created with the thread. You just need to knit the seams up and down on the first seam.

Don’t wait until the tear gets bigger. Remember the adage: “A stitch in time saves nine.” If you fix it early, you’ll use less thread and spend less time.
