This wiki page will show you how to change the language that Alexa recognizes and communicates on Alexa-enabled devices. Currently, in addition to English, the supported languages are German, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese and Japanese (and more will be added soon), however they not merely supported by a translation tool. From the outset, Alexa will be designed specifically for each language, so it’s easy for native speakers to experience. Some features, such as Voice Purchasing, will not work if a language other than the region you currently live in is selected.

Open the Alexa app. It’s a light blue app that looks like a speech bubble with a white border.

  • If you don’t have the app installed, you can download the Alexa app on your Android phone from the Google Play Store or on your iPhone via the App Store and sign in with your email address and password to your Amazon account.

Tap the device you want to change. If you haven’t given the device a custom name, it will have something like Echo or Echo Dot.

Scroll down and tap Language . The current language will be displayed.

Click the drop-down menu to select another language. Selecting a different English-speaking area will cause Alexa to start speaking with that region’s dialect. Alexa currently does not support Vietnamese language, but you can choose from the following languages:

    • You can always change Alexa’s language back by following the sequence of steps above.

    • While the actual language won’t change, choosing an area where the language is different from regular English will help Alexa recognize your voice better if you speak with that particular dialect.
    • If you are learning German or Japanese, try it out, it can also be a good way to practice. At first, try simple commands like asking about the time or the weather.
