When breastfeeding, many mothers often express milk to reduce engorgement, prevent breast sagging, and preserve milk for later use. For many people, expressing milk by hand is more comfortable than using a breast pump. You can express milk anywhere without the need for special tools or equipment. Expressing also helps you to have more milk and milk is also released more easily thanks to skin-to-skin contact that a breast pump cannot replace. If you want to learn how to express milk by hand, keep reading and start with step 1.

Hand washing. You need to wash your hands before performing milking. If you wash your hands with cold water, let them warm up a bit before touching your breasts. Expressing milk with cold hands will take longer. If you’re about to express milk for the first time and aren’t sure how, ask your nurse or husband for help.

Dip a washcloth in warm water and place it on your breasts for about 2 minutes. This step is optional but is good for the milking process.

Breast massage. To prepare more thoroughly before expressing milk by hand, you can use your hands or a soft towel to massage your breasts. You just need to massage, massage the areola on both sides to help the breasts relax and get ready to produce milk.

Sit up straight and lean forward. This position helps you stay comfortable and can express milk more easily. In addition, in a sitting position, you can also express more milk than when standing or lying down.

Place your fingers on the milk sacs in your breasts. You need to place your hand like a “C” above or below the nipple. You do the following:

  • Place your thumb over the nipple, about 2.5cm away from the nipple.
  • Place the index finger about 2.5 cm below the nipple, in line with the thumb.
  • Adjust the position of the fingers so that it is comfortable and suitable for the breast size.
  • Keep your hands on your chest in this position.

Apply pressure to the chest wall. Press gently and firmly, not forcefully on the breast. You should not squeeze too tightly or stretch the areola because doing so will make it harder for milk to come out. Instead, press your thumb and index finger directly into the breast tissue, toward the chest wall. There are a few other things you need to keep in mind:

  • Remember to press inward with your fingers, not outward, and roll but not rub your fingers.
  • Roll your fingers forward to squeeze the milk out from the milk ducts under the areola and nipple.
  • Close your fingers when expressing milk. Spreading fingers will reduce the efficiency of the milking process.
  • If you have large breasts, lift them slightly before pressing.

Milk. Use your thumb and other fingers to create an outward roll, and use this force to press against your breasts. Press, squeeze, and then release. Once you get used to your hands, you can pump to the same rhythm as a baby is nursing, and this will make expressing even easier.

  • Every woman’s breasts are not the same. You need to depend on your breasts to find out where to express the most milk.
  • You can also try expressing milk by massaging, expressing milk, then massaging again.

Store milk in a jar. If you’re only expressing milk to make your breasts more comfortable, you can express the milk on a towel or directly into the tub. And if you want to express milk for later use, you need to do a few things as follows:

  • Use special milk bags to store milk.
  • Express milk directly into the bottle for storage.
  • Use a funnel to pour milk into a bottle or milk bag if necessary.
  • Use a cup with a wide mouth, such as a coffee mug or small glass jar. Once you have filled the cup with milk, you can pour it into a bottle or bag for storage.

Repeat the milking process with the other breast. With each breast, you should change the position of your fingers slightly to be able to express all the milk in the mammary gland. Massaging back and forth between the breasts will also stimulate more milk secretion.
  • Advice

    • You should keep a towel next to you to wipe spilled or dripped milk. When expressing milk, sometimes the milk will not flow directly into the bottle, so you may have some milk splashing on your body or clothes.
    • Sometimes it takes a few tries to get the milk out by hand. If the first milking results are not satisfactory, try again.
    • You can use any hand to express milk. Some people use right-handed because they are right-handed, left-handed people tend to use their left hand more. Use the hand that works best for you.

    Warning

    • Do not squeeze the breasts. Your breasts can become sensitive while you’re breastfeeding, so squeezing them can cause pain.
    • Do not pull the nipple out to express milk. You should press on the areola to force the milk to come out of the milk sac.
