Making your own fairy wings is a great way to save money on Halloween costumes or make cute gifts for kids. The simplest fairy wings can be made from cardboard, but you can make more classic wings with coat hangers and leather socks. If you want more realistic wings, frame them with poster paper or wire, then cover with cellophane!

Use wire cutters to cut off the hooks of the 4 coat hangers. Remember to cut right at the beginning of the twist of the hook. Do not cut into the twisted part of the hanger. [1] X Research Source

  • If the hangers have cardboard wrapped around the bottom crossbar, cut them off with a paper knife.
  • If you don’t have a hanger, you can buy 12-gauge wire. Cut and twist the wire into 4 large turns. The twist will be about 5-8 cm long.

Bend the hangers into ovals or circles. You will need 2 pairs of matching wings, one on the top, the other on the bottom. Don’t bother shaping it to perfection; you can correct it later.

Join the 2 twisted pieces together and glue them together. Lay the first pair of wings down on the plane so that the two twists are facing each other. Sew these two twists together, then wrap them tightly with fabric tape. Repeat this operation for the second pair. [2] X Research Source

  • If you don’t have fabric tape, you can use electrical tape or fake flower tape.

Use extra fabric tape to attach the 2 pairs of wings together. Lay the pairs of wings down on a flat surface, parallel to each other. Stitch the glued twists together and wrap more tape to keep them in place. [3] X Research Sources

  • Don’t worry if the wing parts overlap. You will correct it in the next step.

Adjust the wings to the desired shape, if necessary. Pull the top 2 wings up and the 2 bottom wings down so they don’t overlap. If you are satisfied with the shape of the fairy wings, you can move on to the next step. If you like, you can also bend the wire into circles, ovals or other shapes at this point. {“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/f/ff/Make-Fairy-Wings-Step-6-Version-6.jpg/v4-728px-Make-Fairy-Wings- Step-6-Version-6.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/ff/Make-Fairy-Wings-Step-6-Version-6.jpg/ v4-728px-Make-Fairy-Wings-Step-6-Version-6.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Stretch a knee-high leather sock over each wing, then secure with tape. Insert a knee-high leather sock into each wing, pulling in the center until the sock stretches into a thin layer around the wing. Twist the end of the sock and wrap the tape around it to keep it in place. [5] X Research Sources

  • White socks are best; they will be easy to color if you want to paint. If you want to make the fairy more personal, you can also use other colors, like black for example.
  • If you don’t have knee-high leather socks, you can use leather tights, just cut each tube out from the thigh.

Trim off excess stockings and reshape wings, if necessary. Depending on the tension when you pull the sock, there may be excess sock underneath the tape in the center of the wing, use sharp scissors to cut off the excess, cutting as close to the tape as possible. Refine the shape of the wing if it is distorted.

Spray colored paint on the wings, if you like. Take the fairy wings outdoors or in a well-ventilated place. Put the fairy wings on newspaper, use a spray paint sprayer to lightly spray the paint on the wings and wait for it to dry. Flip the other side over and spray paint over like the front if you like. [6] X Research Source

  • Special spray paint for fabrics or regular spray paint or both can be used.
  • You can paint the entire wings or just spray paint on the tips to create a fade effect.

Hide the tape by wrapping it with felt. Cut a strip of felt fabric the same color as the wings, about 5cm wide. Be sure to cut the fabric long enough to cover the tape in the center of the wing. Wrap the fabric around the central wire and use hot glue or fabric glue to secure it.

  • Instead of wrapping felt, you can wrap a pretty ribbon around the wire to make it more beautiful.
  • To make the fairy wings even more beautiful, you can attach a large fake flower attached to the felt fabric. [7] X Research Sources

Tie 2 long ribbons around the center piece of wire. Cut a long ribbon that harmonizes with the design of the fairy wings. Fold the ribbon in half and place behind the wire in the middle of the wings, the bunny ears fold out about 2.5cm long. Pull the two loose ends of the ribbon through the rabbit ears and tie it into a knot. Push the ribbon to the left wing.

  • Tie the second ribbon in the same way, but this time push the ribbon to the right.

Cut out the pattern, then trace the pattern on the cardboard. Cut out the pattern along the lines just drawn. Place the pattern on a piece of cardboard, then draw a circle around the pattern with a pen. Flip the pattern to the other side like a page in a book and trace another picture.

  • If you don’t have cardboard, you can use poster paper.

Cut close to the inside border of the wings just drawn. Using a paper cutter or a craft knife is best. You can cut with scissors if you make fairy wings out of poster paper. Remember to cut close to the inside of the lines just drawn. That way, you won’t see pencil or ink lines when you finish the wings.

Slit or fold the fairy wings in the middle. Find the midpoint of the wings that will then fold. Using a craft knife, make a slight incision along the center line. Fold the fairy wings in half along the incision line and unfold. [9] X Research Source

  • If you’re using poster paper, simply fold the wings in half, then unfold them.

Paint the fairy wings in one color, if you like. You can paint fairy wings with spray paint, poster paint, even acrylic paint. Paint one side first, let it dry, then paint the other side.

  • If using poster paper, you can skip this step.

Paint the details on the wings if you want the wings to look more realistic. Look at a few pictures of butterfly wings, then use a pencil to draw the patterns on the cardboard wings. Use a paintbrush and acrylic paint or poster paint to color the drawings.

  • You can draw on both sides of the wings, but make sure to wait for one side to dry before drawing the other side.

Use glitter to draw patterns on the wings if you want glittery wings. Draw the pattern with a pencil first, then use glitter glue on it. Iridescent glitter is the most eye-catching, but you can use other colors. If you don’t have glitter glue, you can draw with craft glue (hold the whole bottle of glue to draw), then sprinkle glitter on.

  • See drawings of fairy wings or dragonflies for more ideas.
  • You can paint on both sides of the wing, but remember to let one side dry before painting the other side.

Decorate the fairy wings with other materials if you have creative inspiration. The ideas are limitless. You can use basic crafting materials like glitter glue or paint, or other things like artificial flowers or stones. You can try: [10] X Research Sources

  • Use paint to draw patterns. Stir in a bit of glitter first for an iridescent sheen!
  • Use glue to attach sparkling stones to the fairy wings for more shimmer. Add textures with glitter glue.
  • Glue the coasters to the wings for a snow fairy look.
  • Decorate the fairy wings with fake flowers or fake leaves to pose for the natural fairy.

Sketch of a fairy wing on a poster board. This will be the template for you to shape the wire, so you only need to draw one wing. Start with the basic stroke, then draw more veins and/or inner swirls. Remember to draw the veins/swirls connecting to the bottom corner of the wing, where it protrudes from the back.

  • This wing style is designed to be worn with cardigans or tight clothing.

Bend the strong type of wire according to the line drawn by the fairy wings. Place a sturdy wire (23-25 kg) on top of the poster paper. Bend the wire to match the contour of the fairy wing just drawn. Leave a hand-sized piece of zinc in the lower corner of the fairy’s wing. Use wire cutters to cut excess zinc. Use aluminum foil to hold the contour in place if needed.

  • Aluminum tape looks like metallic cloth tape, except that the surface is not very ribbed.
  • You must use strong zinc wire (type 23-25 kg); otherwise, your wings will be distorted. You can find wire harnesses at hardware stores.

Create more internal shapes with thinner wire. You can use wire of any thickness, as long as it can be seen from a few meters away. Use the same technique as you did with the outline: bend the wire to match the drawing, then cut the excess wire. Glue the ends of the wire to the outer contour with aluminum tape.

Unfold the cellophane roll, spray adhesive and place fairy wings on top. Pull out a piece of cellophane to fit the wing, leaving a little extra. Spray plenty of glue on the cellophane. Don’t cut cellophane in a hurry.

  • Transparent iridescent cellophane looks great, but you can use other colors if you like.
  • You can wear gloves during this step so the cellophane doesn’t stick to your skin.

Pull the roll of cellophane over the wing and cut it. Pull the rest of the cellophane roll over the wing and cut off the excess cellophane. Remember to leave a border around the wing, including the folded parts.

Flatten the wing, then cut the edge in the shape of a wing. Smooth the cellophane with your hands, making sure to smooth it around the edge of the wing and also in the center of the wing. If you see a bulge, be sure to swipe down to flatten it. Finally, cut the cellophane in the shape of a wing, leaving a border of about 2.5 cm around it.

Place a stack of books on the wing and wait to dry. Place the fairy wings on a flat surface, then block a stack of books and/or boxes on top. Use the technique you just learned to make another wing like that. When you cover the second wing with cellophane, the first wing is probably dry.

  • Use the template as the first wing to make the second wing. Thus, you will have symmetrical wings.

Cover the wings with paper before ironing on low heat. Coat the printed paper over the wing, then use the iron on dry mode (no steam) to press for a few seconds. Is gradual from side to side of the wing. When you’re the wing, the cellophane shrinks, wrinkles, and sticks to the wire. Absolutely not directly onto cellophane; Remember to always cover a sheet of paper on top.

  • If the lowest setting doesn’t work, use one step higher.
  • By this time the second wing under the stack of books and/or boxes has also dried.

Trim off excess cellophane, but leave a small border around the wire. Do not cut close to the wire, or the cellophane will peel off. You should leave a small border about 0.3 -0.5 cm around the wing.

  • You can cut the cellophane from the end of the wire underneath the wing.

Complete the second wing. By this time, the second wing is probably dry. Remove the wing from the stack of books and/or boxes. Use an iron to melt the cellophane (remember to cover the top), then cut out, leaving a thin border.

Secure the wings to the U-shaped piece of wire, if desired. Cut a piece of strong zinc (23-25 kg type) and bend it into a U shape, about 2-3 fingers wide and a little longer than a hand. Thread each end of the wing’s wire to one side of the U. Wrap aluminum tape around the U-shaped wire, end to end, to secure the wings.

  • The ends of the wire must be hidden in the tape, with only the wings sticking out of the U-shaped section of zinc.

Slip the wings into the back of a cardigan or sweatshirt. If the fairy wings have a U-shaped frame, you will wear a strapless dress or cardigan first and then slide the wings down your back. The dress or cardigan will keep the wings close to the back. If the fairy wing does not have a U-frame but only has a wire end, you will have to sew small pockets on the back of the fairy shirt and thread the ends of the wire into the bag.
  • Advice

    • A pair of pliers will help you hold and bend the wire more accurately.
    • Layer each piece of iridescent cellophane to create a unique design.
    • Sprinkle glitter in between layers of cellophane for extra sparkle.
    • If 12-gauge wire is not available, you can use 14-gauge or 16-gauge wire. Wire smaller than these sizes will not hold the weight of the wings.
    • Dye the nylon and let it dry before using it as a fairy wing, so you won’t have to use spray paint.
    • You can replace spray paint with acrylic or fabric paint and use a sponge brush or sponge to paint.
    • See pictures of butterfly wings, dragonfly wings and fairy wings for inspiration.

    Warning

    • Do not spray paint indoors. You must do this in a well-ventilated place, preferably outdoors.
