Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a verification method that a computer uses to check the data on a disk (hard disks are similar to hard drives and optical discs like CDs or DVDs). The “cyclic redundancy check” error can occur due to a variety of problems: registry errors, hard drive blockages, failed program installations, or misconfigurations of files. Whatever the cause, the cyclic redundancy check is a serious error and needs to be addressed to avoid data loss or overall system failure. Fortunately, to fix this problem is quite simple, you can use disk utility software (free). [1] X Research Source

Access the CHKDSK utility. CHKDSK (or “check disk”) is a built-in Windows utility that scans and fixes disk errors. CHKDSK has the ability to find and fix minor errors or corrupted files that lead to “cyclic redundancy” errors. Right-click the drive you want to check, then select Properties -> Tops. Under the heading “Error Checking”, click “Check Now”.

  • If the CD or DVD shows this error, it may be because the disc is scratched or dirty. Clean the disc with a soft cloth before trying again.
  • Optical disc errors usually cannot be corrected.
  • If you receive this error on a Mac computer (less common), first try going to Disk Utility > “Repair” to repair the disk.

Choose between basic and advanced scanning platforms. Check the box to indicate whether you want basic testing and debugging or advanced scanning, which is usually the default option.

  • Basic scans will take about 15-20 minutes and advanced scans can take hours. You need to make sure you have time and don’t interrupt once the computer has started.

Restart the computer to start scanning. If you scan the main drive on your computer (where you boot from), CHKDSK will not be able to launch immediately, but will instead schedule a scan for the next time you restart your computer.

  • At this point, you can continue to use the computer as usual, restart when you have enough time for a complete scan.
  • If this hard drive has been used for a long time, you should back up the data before performing the scan. You need to back up all, even inaccessible data for backup.

Use CHKDSK utility access instead. Sometimes launching CHKDSK through right-clicking won’t run the scan and repair process properly. If the first scan failed to fix the problem, try the alternative method of launching CHKDSK.

Open command prompt. Find the “command prompt” program in Accessories.

  • Note that you need to execute the CHKDSK command as an administrator to be eligible to launch the scan.

Type “chkdsk /fx:” into the command prompt. The “x” needs to be replaced with the letter name of the drive you want to scan. Press enter.

  • The steps above are to execute the command that initiates the basic scan. If you want an advanced scan, type “chkdsk /rx:” and replace “x” with the letter’s name of the drive.

Wait for the scan to complete. After the scan is complete, CHKDSK will report and restart the computer. If CHKDSK can fix the problem, here it is.

  • If the /r repair command seems to get stuck and can’t be completed (even if you leave it running overnight) it’s possible that many files are corrupted and CHKDSK can’t be fixed. In this case, apply the next method.
  • Over time, hard drives can generate insignificant damaged files as well as other minor errors through many different forms. CHKDSK can handle many minor errors but cannot fix more serious problems.

By third-party disk utility

Install a free disk utility. When CHKDSK is unable to fix the problem with the hard disk, a third-party disk scanning utility can. Popular options like HDDScan and SeaTops will be an alternative to CHKDSK and can help solve the problem if CHKDSK doesn’t work. [2] X Research Source

  • Many utilities provide various versions of software for different operating systems (such as Mac OS and PC/Windows)
  • Be careful with the “System cleaner” system scan program from untrusted sources. You should look for well-known brands that offer a “disk utility” disk utility. [3] X Research Sources

Open the utility and run the scan. Follow the instructions to scan the drive that reported the “cyclic redundancy check” error. The software will return a short report listing all the errors found.

Fix all errors. It’s important that you let the repair process run from start to finish, so you can leave the machine on its own overnight (if needed). This process may take 2 hours or more, depending on the condition of the hard disk.

  • If the repair process still cannot be completed after scanning for more than 4 hours, this is a sign that the hard disk is damaged. Exit the scan and back up any data you can.

Rescan the computer. This process only takes a few minutes, this is to ensure that the machine is now error free.
  • Advice

    • CDs and DVDs may report a CRC error if the disc is dirty or scratched. Wipe the disc with a soft cloth or purchase a scratch remover to salvage it if the disc is important to you.

    Warning

    • A CRC error with a hard drive can be a sign that the hard drive is about to fail. You need to immediately back up your most important data.
