Measure the width of the computer screen. Use a ruler to measure the horizontal length of the screen from edge to edge. Does not include frames or textures around the screen, only measures the screen.

Measure the height of the computer screen. Measure only the image area, not including the frame or border around the screen. Use a ruler to measure the length of the height vertically from the top edge to the bottom edge of the screen.

Multiply the height times the width. To calculate the area of the image, you find the product of the height and width of the screen. So the area of the image area will be equal to “horizontal width x vertical height”.

  • For example, if the width is 16 inches (40.6 cm) and the height is 10 inches (25.4 cm), the area of the image will be 16 x 10 = 160 square inches.

Determine the aspect ratio by comparing the width and height. Computer monitors are usually made in 4:3, 5:3, 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratios. To find the aspect ratio, compare the width with the height and reduce the number if necessary. [1] X Research Source

  • If the width is 16 inches (40.6 cm) and the height is 10 inches (25.4 cm), the aspect ratio will be 16:10.
  • If the width is 25 inches (63.5 cm) and the height is 15 inches (38.1 cm), the aspect ratio will be 25:15 or 5:3 (reduced by 5).

Determine the distance between two opposing angles to calculate the diagonal length. Diagonal measurements are often used to describe screen sizes. Take a tape measure or ruler and measure the distance between two opposing angles, such as the upper left and lower right corners of the screen. Note: screen frame or bezel is not included. Use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the diagonal distance. If the screen is too large to measure or you don’t want to blur the surface, apply the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the diagonal distance. Take the square of the height plus the square of the width, then calculate the square root of this sum. This is the diagonal measurement. [3] X Research Sources

    • For example, if the screen is 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall, multiply this number by itself (10×10=100). Similarly, multiply the width of 16 inches (40.6 cm) by the number itself (16×16=256). Add these two numbers together (100+256=356), and then calculate the square root of the sum (√356=18.9).

    • You can also determine the screen size by looking up the product model number on the manufacturer’s website or a search engine.
    • There are many websites that determine the computer screen size based on the number of pixels (pixels) detected, such as https://www.infobyip.com/detectdisplaysize.php.
