Watch for signs of termites. You may not see direct evidence of termites, but that doesn’t mean you should be reckless. Sagging floors, holes in the joinery and voids in the foundation are all serious warning signs of the presence of termites. You can also see termites.

  • Take a flashlight and screwdriver down to the basement, check the basement mezzanine and the wooden beams under the floor by tapping the wood and checking for holes, press the wood with a screwdriver to check for strength. If the wood is prone to flaking, you are probably dealing with termites.
  • When checking, be sure to also look out for termite waste. Termite droppings are small round pellets that are wood-like or darker brown in color. The presence of this discharge near weak spots of wood may indicate a termite infestation. [1] X Research Source
  • You can also find termite nests on your property; Subterranean termites will build a system of tunnels and paths out of mud, while drywood termites will appear in their nests inside the wood.

Identify the type of termite in the house. There are two main types of termites that can spread in homes: subterranean termites and drywood termites. Subterranean termites live in the soil around the house and also in the furniture in the house, drywood termites live only in the wood (not in the soil). Subterranean termites are mostly found in warm coastal areas – mainly in California, Texas, Louisiana, Florida and Georgia. Drywood termites can be found anywhere in the United States.

  • Subterranean termites can be found in wood and compost piles around houses in addition to wood floors.
  • Subterranean termites are more destructive to homes than drywood termites and may require different methods of killing termites. [2] X Research Source

Self-treating termites

Make a cardboard trap. Use long, wet, flat sheets of cardboard, stack them on top of each other and place them where termites can access them. Termites eat cellulose (cardboard), so this makes a great trap. When termites come in, take it out and take it to a safe place to burn. Repeat as many times as necessary.

  • Note : This type of trap does not completely solve the problem of termites. This is just a quick response to getting rid of a few hundred termites, usually in one go. You need to combine traps with some other method for a stronger effect.

Try the beneficial roundworms. This is a small worm without segmentation, living naturally on pests in the garden, including termites. This worm searches for a host like termite larvae, burrows into the host’s body and usually kills them within 48 hours. Roundworms use the host’s carcass as a place to lay eggs.

  • You can buy roundworms at garden stores or online. There are about 5 types of roundworms on the market today. [3] X Research Sources
  • Roundworms need to be used immediately after purchase if the soil temperature is above 16 degrees Celsius. If not used, you need to store in the refrigerator. Put roundworms in the ground in the early morning or late evening so they are not damaged by UV rays.

Dry the wood in the sun. If the object infested is not the house, but movable furniture, expose it to the sun. Termites thrive in dark places, so the heat and light from the sun will kill them. Bring wooden furniture out to dry on a sunny day, it is best to dry for 2-3 days.

  • This method works well when combined with cardboard traps to catch and kill termites.

Frozen termites. If you live in a rainy area and can’t hang your furniture in the sun, consider freezing your furniture to kill termites instead. Place the wood chips (or pieces of wood chips) in the freezer for 2-3 days. While this is a bit of a chore for large pieces of wood, you’ll be sure to kill the termites if you can use the freezing method. [4] X Research Sources

Use boric acid. Boric acid is a common and effective way to get rid of termites. In fact, this is the main insecticide used in many store-bought termites. Boric acid shuts down the nervous system of termites and causes them to become dehydrated.

  • The best way to kill termites with boric acid is to use bait.
    • Apply or spray boric acid evenly onto wood (or other cellulose material).
    • Place boric acid bait in a garden near your home or where termites are seen.
    • Check bait regularly and add boric acid if needed. You will see termite carcasses appear nearby.

Purchase and use termite control products. These products are readily available at hardware stores, so this is the first step you need to take to get rid of this pest. You can use termite control with bait or liquid termite products. Place bait near termites and spray termite control products there.

Use microwave termite extermination method. The heat will kill the termites, so you can heat up your home to kill them. However, this method needs to be done by a professional service, as the necessary tools are not readily available for everyone to purchase and use. You need to call a pest control company to find out if this is a good option for your home. [5] X Research Sources

Call for professional service. If you find that termites have spread too much or your home is too important, you should probably call in a professional termite extermination service. When calling for a termite extermination service, you need to remember:

  • Find at least 3 competing companies.
  • See the company’s service records from the Structural Pest Control Council before deciding to hire.
  • Get a contract from an exterminator company, in which the company commits to eliminating termites completely within 2 years. This provision may require the company to return periodically, check for new termites, and get rid of them at no additional cost to you.

Treat yourself in a professional manner. You can buy products that professionals use often. The two most popular products are Termidor SC and Taurus SC used as a liquid around the house. These products can be purchased online at very affordable prices. You can treat your home with professional service results for very little if you’re willing to put the effort into it.

Prevent termites

Keep the house dry. Termites by nature prefer wet places because they need water to live. So you have to remember to keep everything dry, otherwise termites will enter the house.

  • Make sure to fix leaks or standing water inside and outside the house. Sweep or vacuum up excess water if possible.
  • Dirty and wet gutters are ideal habitats for termites, so you should also clear the gutters to prevent termites.

Use a pest repellent. Mix 0.1% permethrin (about 1 tablespoon per 4 liters) [6] X Reliable Source Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations Go to the source for paint, wood polish, or wallpaper glue when building house or repaint the house to repel termites permanently. You can even add permethrin to your floor cement or laminate flooring glue. Permethrin is a safe pesticide for humans, so it does not pose an additional risk of poisoning.

Keep piles of wood away from the house. Termites live on wood, so you should keep large piles of firewood, tree trunks and branches away from home. When you leave a lot of wood in your yard, you are inviting termites to a party. If you absolutely must keep wood near your home, cover it up to keep it dry; This will help limit attracting termites. If wood must be used, you should treat it with permethrin as described above.

Seal all cracks in the house. The first and most important step to making sure termites don’t enter your home is to seal windows, doors, and cracks around your home. The openings around electrical wires and water pipes leading from the outside to the house and from the inside to the outside are convenient passages for termites to easily enter the house.

  • Glass doors, windows, and hallways are also essential if you’re concerned about the spread of termites.

Scheduled home isolation. One of the most effective ways to keep your home free of termites is to maintain a protective barrier around your home. Fortunately, this method is inexpensive if you do it yourself with quality specialized products like the Termidor SC or Taurus SC. Both products contain the pesticide Fipronil in the same concentration and are used as a liquid around the outside of the home. Fipronil has very low toxicity but is highly effective in killing termites and ants.
  • Advice

    • Online pest control resources from retailers have videos that teach how to treat termites professionally. It’s also a good idea to watch these videos before buying the product to know the amount of work to be done and to do it yourself effectively.
    • Termite damage can be devastating to your home, so if you’re not sure you can get rid of termites in your home, you should call a professional service as soon as possible.
    • Spraying with insecticide once a week and sprinkling boric acid in the holes near termites also helps.
    • Permethrin is toxic to cats. Do not use this substance if you have cats in your home.
