Point your phone’s microphone towards the sound you want to pick up. On most smartphones, the microphone is located at the bottom of the phone screen, close to your mouth. For best results, you will place the microphone close to the sound source (about 2.5-5cm away). If you can’t get close, point the microphone towards the sound.

  • If you don’t have volume issues (like when you’re in a quiet room), simply place your phone on the table right next to you with the screen facing up.

  • Advice

    • If you cannot connect wirelessly to WO Mic, make sure TCP output port 8125 and UDP input port 8126 are not blocked by Firewall program. You can refer to WO Mic’s FAQ page for further assistance. [14] X Research Source
    • If you want to use an app that captures multiple tracks (often useful for musicians), you can try J4T Multitrack (on Android) or FourTrack (on iOS). Most programs that record multiple audio clips, including the two above, are available for a fee.
    • You can find many other microphone apps with special functions, but there are too many good recording apps to list here. A few quality options for specific uses are as follows:
      • The Story Corps program is designed to record family stories. The app can record for 45 minutes and has options that make it easy for users to share and save stories.
      • The Crowd Mics program allows users to attend large events using smartphones as microphones. [15] X Research Source
      • The Voice Changer Plus program (and similar apps) lets you tweak your recordings with cool effects. [16] X Research Source
    • As you record, be aware of your surroundings and noise. Don’t record in a large, empty room with lots of hard surfaces, as these elements can create unpleasant echoes in the recording. Carpets, soft furniture, and blankets all help reduce echoes. Don’t record when there’s noise from construction sites, lawn mowers, and airplanes around, as these are often loud in the recording. Also, don’t record outdoors. Even when the space seems quiet, a breeze blowing through sounds like a hurricane in the recording.
    • If Voice Memos on iPhone doesn’t work, you can try Voice Recorder. [17] X Research Source
