This is an article on how to use your phone as a microphone with a built-in or downloaded application. You can find lots of free apps, and many even let you use your phone as a microphone on your computer.

  • The free WO Mic app is available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Although the WO Mic mobile app works on iPhone and Android phones, the desktop program is only available on Windows (or Linux) computers.

Tap Transport and select a transfer mode. A menu will appear and you can touch to choose to connect via USB, WiFi or Bluetooth. Connecting via USB is the recommended option as it is the strongest connection and has the highest bit rate. [1]

  • With the USB option, you need to connect your phone to your computer via USB, and then enable USB Debugging Mode for Android only by going to Settings > About > Developer Options . [2]
  • With WiFi option, make sure your phone recognizes your computer’s wireless network connection and connects to the network successfully. The home screen of your phone always has a small WiFi icon indicating that the device has a network connection.
  • With Bluetooth, you need to make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the device. You can usually turn Bluetooth on or off on your phone’s “Settings” menu. In addition, you also need to enable Bluetooth on your computer through the Contrp Panel or the wireless connection menu. Wait for the device to pair with the computer.

Click Connect . This is the option at the bottom of the window.

  • You’ll see the current status (Connected), Disconnected, and the connection type (USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) in a pane at the bottom of the program’s window on your computer.
  • As soon as the connection is successful, the sound received by the phone will be transmitted to the computer. If you want to listen to audio recorded with your phone, go to Options > Play in speaker on the computer program. [3]

Point your phone’s microphone towards the sound you want to pick up. On most smartphones, the microphone is located at the bottom of the phone screen, close to your mouth. For best results, you will place the microphone close to the sound source (about 2.5-5cm away). If you can’t get close, point the microphone towards the sound.

  • If you don’t have volume issues (like when you’re in a quiet room), simply place your phone on the table right next to you with the screen facing up.

Touch the checkmark to stop recording. To stop and save the recording, you can tap the circle with a check mark at the bottom of the screen.

  • If you want to pause the recording and start it again later, tap the timed circle button. You’ll see the word “Pause” change to “Resume” indicating that you can resume recording.

Play back the recording (optional). If you want to make sure the recording is clear and noise-free, you can touch the play icon to listen to it again.

  • You can also change the name of the file by touching the display default name (usually “Recording 1”.
  • The audio file has been saved and you can find it by tapping Recordings in the bottom left corner of the app’s main screen.

Carpets, soft furniture, and blankets all help reduce echoes. Don’t record when there’s noise from construction sites, lawn mowers, and airplanes around, as these are often loud in the recording. Also, don’t record outdoors. Even when the space seems quiet, a breeze blowing through sounds like a hurricane in the recording.
