In this article, wikiHow will show you how to buy ringtones for iPhone from the iTunes Store or create your own. After you buy or upload a ringtone, you can add it to your iPhone.

Open the iTunes Store on your iPhone. The app has a purple background icon with a white musical note surrounded by a circle. You can find the app on the Home screen.

  • If you can’t find the iTunes Store app, open Settings , scroll down and select Sounds (or Sounds & Haptics on iPhone 7), select Ringtone > Store in upper right corner of the screen.

Find the ringtone you want to buy. You can scroll down to see the “Featured” page, or go to the Search tab at the bottom of the screen and type the name of an artist, song, or movie to find it.

Tap the price to the right of the ringtone. If you’re looking for a specific category, tap the Ringtones tab at the top of the page.

Enter your Apple account password. You can scan your fingerprint if your phone uses Touch ID.

  • If you entered your password in the iTunes Store about half an hour ago, you won’t see this option.

Click Done to proceed with downloading the ringtone. It will appear at the bottom of the “New Tone” menu. If you want to assign this ringtone to a specific person or function, you can choose one of the following:

  • Set as Default Ringtone – Set the selected ringtone as the default ringtone for incoming and FaceTime calls.
  • Set as Default Text Tone – Set the selected ringtone as incoming message alert.
  • Assign to a Contact – Opens the contact list for you to select the contact you want to assign a ringtone to.

Wait for the ringtone to download to your device. Once the download is complete, the ringtone will appear in the “Ringtone” list.

Open iTunes. The app has a white icon with a multicolored musical note in front of it. If you don’t have iTunes installed on your computer, download and install it before continuing.

  • If there is an iTunes update pop-up, click Download Update and wait for iTunes to update. You need to restart your computer after updating iTunes.

Open your favorite song on iTunes. You can click and drag any .mp3-file into the iTunes window.

  • If iTunes is your computer’s default music player, just double-click the song.
  • If the song is already in the library, just redirect there.

Double click on the song to open the music. You need to record the following:

  • Ringtone start time.
  • The end time of the ringtone. The maximum length of an iPhone ringtone is 30 seconds.

Enter the start time in the “Start” dialog box. This is the time to start cutting the ringtone.

  • You enter the timestamp in the following format:minutes:seconds:percentages of seconds. If the time stamp is 1 minute 30 seconds, enter “01:30.0”.

Click OK . This button is near the bottom of the “Get Info” window. The ringtone has been cut, now you just need to convert it to a ringtone format supported by iPhone.

Right click or use 2 fingers to click on the AAC file. Don’t forget to double check the song length before you work, because you want to choose the shorter of the two songs of the same name on this list.

Change the AAC file extension from .m4a to .m4r . The process on Mac and Windows will be different:

  • Mac – First click to select file, click again to rename. Select the “.m4a” part of the file name, then type “.m4r” instead. Press the ⏎ Return key, then click Use .m4r when prompted.
  • PC – Make sure your computer is set up to display the extension. Right click on the AAC file, select Rename , change “.m4a” to “.m4r”. Press ↵ Enter , click OK when prompted.

Delete the AAC file on iTunes. Don’t forget to click Keep File when prompted, if you select Move to Trash (or Move to Recycle Bin ) it will also delete the ringtone file.

Double click on the ringtone file in Finder or Explorer. The ringtone will open in iTunes and be added to your iTunes library as a tune.
