In this article, the wikiHow will show you how to restore your Windows computer’s BIOS (short for Basic Input/Output Settings) to factory settings. You can operate on the BIOS page of most computers. However, if you can’t access the BIOS page, you need to reset the BIOS by opening the case and removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard, or re-plugging the motherboard connector in the computer case.

In some cases, opening the computer case will void the warranty and risk damage to the machine. If the BIOS cannot be accessed, the best option is to take the computer to a technician instead of doing it yourself.

Wait for the boot screen to appear. Once you see the Windows logo, you only have limited time to press the setup key.

Press the Del or F2 key to enter the setup page. The setting key on each model is different, please see the message on the screen to apply.

  • If the Del or F2 key doesn’t work, try F8 or F10 .
  • You can press the “F” key to access the BIOS. It’s on the top of the keyboard, although you have to find and hold the Fn key while pressing the correct “F” key.

Wait for the BIOS to load. After pressing the correct setup key, the machine will load the BIOS page. This process only takes a few seconds. When the download is complete, you are taken to the BIOS setup menu.

Find the “Setup Defaults” option. The location and name of the option on each model are different, usually you will see the items “Reset to Default”, “Factory Default”, “Setup Defaults” (Settings). default) or something like that. This option can be in any tab or listed near the navigation button.

Select “Load Setup Defaults” and press the ↵ Enter key. Use arrow keys to select, press ↵ Enter key to start BIOS reset.

Save changes and confirm selection if necessary. This is usually combined with the BIOS exit process. The computer will restart automatically. If you need to change the BIOS settings after the reset, you need to reboot the machine again and access the BIOS to change.

Power off the computer. Use the Start menu or hold down the power key to turn off the device.

Open the case. You need to reach your computer’s motherboard. Be very careful when working inside the computer because static electricity can easily damage electrically sensitive components.

Remove the CMOS battery. The pin is usually located near the PCI, but sometimes it is located somewhere else depending on the motherboard manufacturer. The battery may be obstructed by the expansion card or cable. Standard 3V CMOS battery, round and flat (CR2032).

  • The CMOS battery cannot always be removed. If the battery can’t be removed, don’t try, try resetting the motherboard connector.

Press the power button. Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds to release all the remaining current in the capacitor. When the power is turned off, the CMOS memory will be reset and restore the BIOS to factory settings.

Reinsert the CMOS battery. Carefully insert the battery into the machine. Make sure you insert the battery in the correct direction. The smaller side will face down.

Reassemble the computer. Handle very carefully, remember to ground before doing.

Connect the computer to a power source. If the wall power is disconnected and/or the battery is removed, plug it back in and/or insert the battery into the machine.

Find the CMOS connector. Find the 3-pin BIOS control pin on the motherboard. It is usually located near the CMOS battery. The connector is plugged into 2 out of 3 sockets.

  • The connector may be labeled CLEAR, CLR, CLEAR CMOS, PSSWRD, etc. Refer to your motherboard documentation to find the correct connector.

Change the connector to another 2 pins. For example, if the connector is plugged into the 1st and 2nd pins, switch to the 2nd and 3rd pins. When removing the connector, be sure to pull it straight up so as not to bend the pins.
