This article shows you how to convert PDF files into editable text through Google Docs on your computer. However, you should note that Google Docs will change the format of the PDF file and delete all images; If preserving the format of the PDF file is important, you should not use Google Docs to edit the file.

Steps

Find out which PDF files you can edit. PDF files created from text, such as Word or Notepad files, can be opened as text files on Google Docs, as long as the file is not encrypted.

  • If the PDF file you want to edit is an image file (or contains multiple images) or is encrypted, you cannot use Google Docs to edit the PDF.

Open Google Docs. Visit https://docs.google.com/ using your computer’s web browser. This opens the Google Docs page if you’re signed in.

  • If you’re not signed in, click Go to Google Docs in the middle of the page, then enter your email address and password when prompted. If you are asked to sign in without further clicking, then continue.

Select PDF file. Click the PDF file you want to upload to Google Docs. If the PDF file is not saved in the open folder, you will click on the folder containing the PDF file on the left side of the window.

    Download the edited PDF file. Click File , select Download as in the menu, and select PDF Document in the menu that appears. This is to convert the text to PDF and download the file to your computer.

    • You can edit PDF files without changing the inherent formatting by using programs other than Google Docs.

    Warning

    • While you can install PDF to Word converter apps for Google Drive, these apps do not allow you to convert PDF images and formats to Word documents.
