What is IgA vasculitis and what causes it?
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thao Nguyen , IgA vasculitis is a form of vasculitis caused by Schonlein Henoch purpura that causes bleeding in the capillaries in the intestines, kidneys, joints and possibly on the skin.
Schonlein Henoch purpura usually occurs in boys aged 4-6 years and young adults. Children with IgA vasculitis may have viral, bacterial, or upper respiratory tract infections.
Manifestations of the disease are mainly purple rashes on the buttocks and legs, for patients with kidney disease, there will be signs of abdominal pain and joint pain. The disease often occurs in the winter, although it can recover on its own, but the disease also affects the kidneys, so the patient needs to go to the hospital for proper treatment.
Although the cause of IgA vasculitis is unknown, there are several factors that can cause the disease including:
- Frequent use of antibiotics, antihistamines.
- Respiratory tract infections, cholera, typhoid , measles caused by bacteria, viruses.
- Climate, weather becoming colder, being bitten by strange insects or exposed to toxic chemicals.
Symptoms of Schonlein Henoch hemorrhagic vasculitis
Some symptoms of IgA vasculitis include:
- Purple purpura occurs in places such as the buttocks, feet, legs and can be on the face, arms as well as many other places on the body.
- Appears joint pain, joint swelling, arthritis in the knees and ankles. Joint pain may appear 1-2 days before the rash and subside until it disappears.
- Children with IgA vasculitis often have some gastrointestinal symptoms after the rash, such as nausea, abdominal pain, and bloody stools.
- About 20-50% of patients will have symptoms of proteinuria and hematuria. However, these symptoms are usually less common until urinalysis.
Is Schonlein Henoch hemorrhagic vasculitis dangerous?
The majority of patients with Schonlein Henoch hemorrhagic vasculitis will gradually clear up after about a week and leave no lasting consequences. However, children will be at risk for milder disease recurrences more often.
Some complications that Schonlein Henoch hemorrhagic vasculitis can cause include:
- Hematuria, kidney failure and hypertension due to kidney damage. In rare cases, kidney damage causes end-stage kidney disease that is very dangerous for a child.
- Causes intussusception and reduced blood flow to the intestines leading to enteritis as well as pancreatitis.
- Women who have had IgA vasculitis since childhood are more likely to develop high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Diagnosis and treatment of IgA . vasculitis
In addition to relying on symptoms such as rash, swelling, joint pain, and digestive system problems to diagnose IgA vasculitis, patients can also conduct a number of tests to diagnose the disease such as:
- Blood test to see IgA or erythrocyte sedimentation rate
- Monthly urinalysis for 6 months to measure protein levels in the blood and blood in the urine.
- Skin biopsies and kidney biopsies
- Abdominal ultrasound to evaluate intestinal complications
IgA vasculitis will gradually decrease and disappear from 1 to 8 weeks, so you will need to follow some of the following measures to prevent the disease from causing complications such as:
- Use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Rest and drink water often to rehydrate
- Do some urine tests as ordered by your doctor.
