This article guides you to access and control a computer from another computer by installing remote desktop software on both computers. Once both computers have the program installed, you can set one as a “server” so that it can be controlled from anywhere, as long as both computers have an internet connection, is open-sourced and has the appropriate software installed. Programs such as TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop are installable on both Windows and Mac computers; Windows Remote Desktop works only on Windows host computers (using Windows 10 Professional operating system) and is accessed by other Windows or Mac computers.

Install Chrome Remote Desktop on both computers. This is a free tool from Google that allows you to remotely control a computer on another computer. This tool requires you to use the Google Chrome web browser; so if you don’t have Chrome installed, get the program from https://www.google.com/chrome. You need to complete the following steps on both computers:

  • Open Google Chrome. [1] X Research Source
  • Go to https://remotedesktop.google.com/access
  • Click the blue and white arrow icon. A new window will appear on the screen that will take you to the Chrome Remote Desktop page on the Chrome store.
  • Click Add to Chrome on the Chrome store, then click Add extension to confirm.
  • Close the Chrome store window so you can see the original page again.
  • Click the blue and white ACCEPT & INSTALL (Accept & Install) button, and then allow the access rights to continue as required.
  • Enter a name for the computer and click NEXT .
  • Enter and confirm the 6-digit PIN. After confirmation, Remote Desktop will start.

Generate a support code on the computer you want to access. Now that Chrome Remote Desktop is installed on both computers, you need to generate a code that the other computer can use when accessing. Code is only valid for 5 minutes from creation; so you need to do this before making the connection. Here’s how to generate the code on the computer that receives the connection:

  • Click the Remote Support tab near the top of the page.
  • Click the GENERATE CODE button.

Go to https://remotedesktop.google.com/support on the computer that will make the connection. Remember that you need to do this using the Google Chrome web browser.

Enter the support code in the “Give Support” blank field and click Connect . It’s the second empty field on the page. An invitation will be sent to the computer you want to access.

Click Share on the computer receiving the connection. After a while, the remote computer’s screen will appear in the Chrome browser of the connected computer.

Double-click the TeamViewer. On Windows, this is the installation file called “TeamViewer_Setup”, while Mac users will double-click the “TeamViewer.dmg” file.

Install TeamViewer. Do the following:

  • Windows – Check the “Installation to access this computer remotely” box, check the “Personal / Non-commercial use” box, and click Accept – Finish .
  • Mac – Double click the setup file, click OK , open the Apple menu , click System Preferences , click Security and Privacy , click Open Anyway . ) next to the “TeamViewer” message and click Open when asked. Follow the instructions on the screen.

View the computer’s ID. On the left side of the TeamViewer window, you’ll see a “Your ID” section below the “Allow Remote Contrp” heading. You need this ID to access the host computer.

Create your own password. You will do the following:

  • Move the mouse pointer to the current password.
  • Click the circular arrow to the left of the password.
  • Click Set personal password in the menu that appears.
  • Enter the password you want to generate in the “Password” and “Confirm password” fields.

View the screen of the connected computer. After a while, you will see the screen of the first computer show up in the TeamViewer window on the second computer screen.

  • Once you see the host computer’s screen, you can work on it even if you’re using your computer.
  • To disconnect, you’ll click the X at the top of the TeamViewer window.

    • Consider disabling the host computer’s “Sleep” or “Hibernate” time limit, as you may not be able to connect to a computer that is in this mode.
    • If you don’t have a password on your Windows computer when you want to use Remote Desktop, you need to create a password before you can use Remote Desktop.
