Songbirds like to live alone and are relatively easy to care for. They will be happy if provided with fresh food and space to fly. Even if you only keep a songbird, it will need a large cage and basic supplies. You must feed and water your birds once a day and encourage them to get plenty of exercise to keep them healthy and happy!
Steps
Build a bird house
- Do not buy round or decorative cages. These types of cages do not have enough space for the birds to fly.
- Choose metal cage or powder coated iron cage. [1] X Research Source
- The family room, home office or dining room can be suitable places to place bird cages. Do not place the birdcage in the kitchen.
- Do not use sprays, air fresheners, wood polish sprays, scented candles, smoke, or use fragrance products in the room where the bird cage is located.
- Do not leave the birdcage on the ground. The birdcage should be placed at least eye level.
- Avoid using cat litter or shavings as a backing material.
- The branches can be used as a great place for birds to perch.
- Place the beans in the cage about 40 cm apart. Attach two plants facing each other at either end of the cage to allow maximum room for the birds to fly. [3] X Research Sources
Taking care of the bird’s nest
- Some good vegetables and fruits for canaries include kale, apples, broccoli, grapes, dandelions, oranges, bananas, beans, and watermelon.
- Attach the squid shell and mineral stone for birds to the wall of the cage. Birds will eat gradually to get calcium and minerals.
- Never feed an avocado to a songbird, as this fruit is toxic to birds.
- Liners and plates in bird cages need to be cleaned daily.
- Common signs of disease in birds are ruffled or thinning feathers, inactivity, discolored stools, discharge around the eyes or beak, and squinting.
- In the United States, you can use the data on the following page to find a veterinarian who specializes in bird diseases, Association of Avian Vets.
Maintain bird activity levels
- Close all windows and doors before releasing the bird. All windows and mirrors should be covered to prevent birds from hitting the glass.
- Remember to turn off the ceiling fan before releasing the bird from the cage.
- Occasionally, the female can learn to sing, although this is rare. Usually, however, the female only chirps.
Advice
- Building a birdhouse and feeding it properly are the two most important factors in keeping the canaries healthy and happy. With good care, your bird can live up to 14 years.
- You may want to find a companion for your bird, but songbirds often prefer to live alone in a cage.
