Dial “011” on the keypad. International Direct Dialing (IDD) is for the United States before the phone number. This prefix indicates that the phone number you will call is outside of the United States.

  • Remember that “011” is a prefix for the North American Telephone Numbering Plan only. If you are calling from a country other than the US, find the country’s IDD. [1] X Research Source
  • Sometimes international phone numbers will include a “+” in front of them. If you are using a mobile phone to dial a number, you can enter a “+” sign (usually the same key as the number “0”) instead of “011”. Or you can just replace the “+” with “011” if you want. [2] X Research Source

Add area code. Specify the area code of the country you are calling from. This number will vary depending on the country you want to call, but will generally consist of 1-3 digits.

  • For example, if you were calling a phone number in Australia, the country code would be “61”. So you need to dial 011 (IDD number) then 61 (country area code).
  • Note: some countries use the same area code. For example, in the United States, Canada, most of the Caribbean, Guam and other territories in the United States use the same area code “1”. [3] X Research Sources
  • It’s also possible that another number needs to be added to the area code if the country you’re calling has its own method for calling a mobile phone instead of a land line. For example, in Mexico, you need to add “1” after the country code (“52”) to call a cell phone number. [4] X Federal Communications Commission Trusted Source Go to Source

Dial the area/city code (if applicable). After dialing the IDD number and country code, you need to enter the city or area code (usually included in the phone number as part of the local number). This number will narrow the phone number to a specific city or region in the country you are calling.

  • The area/city code can be 1-3 digits long. [5] X Research Sources
  • Note: small countries usually don’t use area or city codes, in which case you just need to dial the given number.
  • Note: if the phone number you have does not contain an area/city code, ask the person who gave it to you instead of looking it up yourself based on the location. Their current address or home city may not be the area code, as it’s likely the person bought the phone somewhere else.

Enter the rest of the phone number. Dial the rest of the phone number you have after entering your IDD number, country code, and area/city code. Finally, press the call button to make a call.

  • Note: phone numbers for other countries may be longer or shorter than the standard 7-digit domestic number in the United States.
  • If there is a “0” in front of this number, skip it and dial the numbers after. Zero is the area code for domestic calls in many countries but does not apply to international calls. [6] X Research Sources
  • Assume that you are going to call the British Museum in London, UK. To call from the US, you need to dial the IDD number “011”. The UK area code is “44” and the area code for London is “20”. The rest of the phone number is “7323 8299”. In short, you will have to dial the entire number 011 44 20 7323 8299 to call the Museum.

Use Skype to dial international numbers. We can call international phone numbers directly using the Skype desktop and mobile apps. You need to purchase Skype credit to cover your call charges or subscribe to a monthly payment. [7] X Research Sources

  • Open the Skype app dial pad with buttons similar to the 10 keys on a phone dial pad. Select the country you will be calling from the drop-down menu. The country code will be automatically added, so just tap or enter the rest of the phone number along with the area code. There is no need to use an IDD number.
  • If the recipient of the call has a Skype account, we can skip the dialing and proceed to call for free. Just add him/her as a contact and start a free voice or video call at any time.

Try using another service like MagicApp or PopTox. You can use another service with the same Internet platform to call numbers abroad. These applications can be used on a computer with an Internet connection or a mobile device with a data plan to call regular phone numbers.

  • Try a service like PopTox if you want to call from your computer’s browser without downloading apps or software.
  • Check out mobile apps like MagicApp and Talkatone to make free international calls. [8] X Research Resources Or you can try a service like Google Hangouts, Rebtel or Vonage for affordable calling. [9] X Research Source

You might consider an online service that doesn’t use a phone number. Ask the person you need to call if they use another online application that doesn’t require a regular phone number. These services use VoIP technology (short for Voice over Internet Protocp, meaning Voice over IP protocol) that allows registration and calls to other users in the same application completely free.

  • Try popular services like Google Hangouts, Viber or Facebook Messenger. These apps only require you to subscribe to the service to call other users in the same app for free. [10] X Research Source
  • You need to make sure that you are both connected to a stable Internet before starting a call through the application on your computer or phone. Data charges still apply if you use the app on your mobile device without a Wi-Fi connection.

Find out if the international number you will be calling is a mobile number. You need to determine if this foreign number is a landline or a mobile phone. This will affect the rates you pay when calling from the US and the calling method.

  • International calls to mobile phones are often charged more than calls to landlines or land lines. You’ll need to first determine the type of phone you’ll be calling and choose landline dialing if possible. [11] X Federal Communications Commission Trusted Source Go to Source
  • Some countries have standards for distinguishing a number that is said to be a landline or a mobile phone, usually by means of one or more numbers preceded it.

Ask your phone carrier about international call rates. Talk to the service provider of the phone you will be using for international calls before dialing. Ask both landline and mobile phone carriers (if you’re offered both), as rates can vary from one party to another.

  • If you plan to call abroad frequently, ask your provider about international calling plans. Or you can ask about the rates they will charge if you only make one call abroad.
  • Some phone carriers can give you specific instructions on how to dial internationally. Note: when calling outside from any domestic company line, you may need to dial “9”.

Learn more about international calling plans. Preliminary research on all charges associated with international calling plans, prepaid calling cards and other calling options. We need to know exactly what we’ll be charged for calling overseas, especially if you’re calling often.

    • Be careful with international calling plans of phone carriers. While each call is advertised as competitive rates, excess charges or additional costs for these services are still cause for concern. International calling plans are only worth the money if you have to make a certain number of calls every month. [12] X Federal Communications Commission Trusted Source Go to Source
    • International calling cards and online services are often less expensive options than mobile or landline calling plans. Calling cards are prepaid, so you only pay for what you use. Internet-based services can be free or offer flexible fee options. Whichever option you choose, it’s important to have a clear understanding of all policies and costs.

  • Advice

    • You should be familiar with international calling codes. Although this information is always available on Google, it will be quite time consuming if you have to search the internet every time you call. It is not necessary to know all the codes of all the countries in the world, you just need to remember the numbers that are often used.
    • Check the time zone again. Maybe it’s the middle of the day when you call, but it’s midnight at the recipient’s place. It would be impolite to wake them up because the matter is not so urgent.
    • The study of cultural history in general. You can make social mistakes without even realizing it, so it’s better to be careful.
    • Another example: if you want to call Guatemala from the US, dial the US exit code (011) and the Guatemala area code (502), followed by the recipient’s phone number. The sequence of numbers to dial will be similar to the following: 011-502-xxxx-xxxx
