This wikiHow teaches you how to find your Windows product key on your computer. You can use Command Prompt or the free ProduKey app to find the activation key. In addition, ProduKey can also get the key code in the hard drive of the computer that is suspended. If you upgrade to Windows 10 during the trial period, there will be no product key, but you can access the digital certificate by signing in to your Microsoft Account on the new computer.

Type command prompt into Start. The Command Prompt application will be found on the computer.

Record the product key. You should see a 25-character product key appear just below the command you just entered; This is the product key.

Open the ProduKey website. Go to http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html on your computer.

Open the ProduKey folder. Double-click the ProduKey ZIP file in the default download folder on your computer (such as the desktop).

Connect the hard drive of the suspended computer to the working computer. You need to remove the hard drive from the suspended computer, plug the hard drive into the adapter, and plug the adapter into another working Windows computer.

  • Depending on the type of hard drive you need a SATA or IDE adapter. IDE drives have wide headers at the end of the connection ribbon, while SATA drives have narrower headers and ribbons.
