Do you avoid shaking hands with others because your hands are sweaty? Do your feet sweat so much that your socks and shoes always smell? Are you ashamed of spreading sweat stains under your arms? These are problems that are not unique to you. You may have a condition called hyperhidrosis. Even if you don’t have a medical condition and still sweat a lot, you can still take steps to help prevent the smell and wetness from making you feel self-conscious and affecting your life.

Start using an underarm antiperspirant wax product. Read the label carefully to make sure it’s an antiperspirant and not just a deodorant. Deodorants mask underarm odor but do not help control excessive sweating.

Look for products labeled “special treatment”. Specific antiperspirants cost more but are more effective at reducing sweating.

Use an antiperspirant once in the morning and once before going to bed. Applying an antiperspirant twice daily has been clinically proven to be very effective at preventing excessive sweating. If you only use it once, you should apply it before going to bed instead of applying it in the morning. In addition, you should also massage the antiperspirant product to absorb into the skin.

Only apply antiperspirant products to dry skin. If the underarm area is sweaty or after you have just showered, you should dry with a towel or use a dryer on cool setting to dry. Antiperspirants applied to wet underarms can cause skin irritation.

Use an antiperspirant on other parts of your body than under your arms. Aerosp antiperspirants are a great solution to sweaty feet, as long as you make sure you spray them both on the soles of your feet and between your toes. If your face sweats a lot, you should try applying a little antiperspirant along the hairline. It is advisable to test before going out in public to make sure the antiperspirant product does not irritate the skin of the face. [1] X Research Source

Choose sweat-wicking fabrics. Cotton fabric will absorb moisture similar to the fabric used to make sportswear (with hygroscopic properties). Alternatively, you can choose clothes from loose weaves, such as linen.

Wear multiple layers. Men should wear sweat-wicking bras, while women can wear absorbent two-pieces or use sweat-absorbing patches.

Choose the right color. If you wear white, people will easily notice you sweat. If you choose a bold color or a patterned fabric, the perspiration won’t be too obvious.

Choose “breathable” shoes if your feet are sweaty. Brands like Geox sell insoles that absorb moisture and allow moisture to escape through holes in the insoles. On the other hand, you can reduce sweaty feet by wearing shoes made of leather or other natural materials. [2] X Research Source Wear sandals or go barefoot when possible to allow your feet to breathe.

Bring spare clothes. Bring an extra t-shirt or jacket to change into in the middle of the day, when there are traces of sweat on your clothes. Change clothes in the bathroom or in the car, and use a cloth or handkerchief to wipe away sweat before putting on new clothes. Also, if your feet are sweaty and smelly, you should bring extra socks and spare shoes. [3] X Research Sources

Do not eat spicy food. Foods like hot peppers make you sweat more, while onions and garlic make sweat smell bad. You should eat more frugal foods throughout the day if you are at work or in public.

Lose weight . If you are overweight or obese, losing weight will help reduce the amount of sweat you produce. The more you weigh, the more you sweat because it’s harder for your body to cool down effectively.

Personal hygiene. You can significantly reduce the smell of sweat with the simple habit of regular personal hygiene.

  • Shower daily (shower or bath). In severe cases, you should shower twice daily. Use deodorant soap to help get rid of odor-causing bacteria.
  • When you go out, you should bring baby wipes or similar wet wipes. Go to the bathroom to quickly wipe the sweat under your arms and body with a wet towel to clean it like it was before.
  • Always carry an antiperspirant with you for quick use, especially after physical activity or stressful activities like giving a speech. If you have a separate workspace, you can place the antiperspirant roller in the desk drawer. Just be sure not to put the antiperspirant in a hot car to prevent it from melting.

Quit drinking caffeinated beverages. These drinks make you sweat excessively.
Try using sage leaves. Some people believe that sage leaves can help calm the nerves that make you sweat a lot. Try this sage-based recipe to prevent excessive sweating:

  • Add 4 tablespoons of sage leaves to 2 cups (500 ml) of boiling water. Simmer for 5 minutes and then pour the water through a small hole sieve to extract the drinking water.

Talk to your doctor or dermatologist first. If your clothes are soaking wet, making you awkward or unable to control the smell of sweat, you should see a general practitioner or a dermatologist. The health care professional may conduct blood tests to check the thyroid or look for signs of infection, or conduct other tests according to professional judgment.

Proceed with surgery as a last resort. You have 2 options.

  • Underarm surgery . The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in a dermatologist’s office. Your doctor will use suction, curettage, or laser to destroy the sweat glands. You usually recover in 2 days but need to limit use of the arm for about 1 week. Unfortunately, health insurance may not cover this surgery.
  • Endoscopic sympathectomy . The surgeon will put the patient under general anesthesia and then cut the nerves from the spine responsible for stimulating excessive sweating. This surgical procedure can have serious side effects, including low blood pressure, poor heat tolerance, and arrhythmias. Therefore, this method is only recommended when other treatments fail.

  • Advice

    • Drink as much water as possible (especially on a hot day) to detox your body.
    • Even if the sweat is obvious, you shouldn’t wear extra clothes to cover it up. Doing so only causes bad odors and makes the condition worse. Eventually the sweat will dry. Otherwise, you should go to the bathroom to clean up.
    • Do not drink milk if you plan to be out in the hot sun all day. Milk makes you feel tired and sweat more.
    • If you are outdoors, take frequent breaks. Have a small amount of dairy products during breaks. Also, bring a spray bottle of water when outdoors to spray on hot areas of your body to moisturize your skin and prevent sweating.
    • Hyperthyroidism can be secondary to excessive sweating. If you have hyperthyroidism, you must seek medical help. This could be a sign of diabetes.
    • Try not to feel embarrassed by the sweat stain.
    • Sometimes sweating is due to a poor diet. Unhealthy diets or too many sweet foods can be the cause of increased sweating. It can also be a common problem in diabetics.
    • Take a cold shower to prevent extra sweating, and drink cool water to hydrate and cool your body.
    • Try to stay calm to avoid sweating from anxiety.
    • Dark clothing has the ability to absorb heat, making you sweat more.

    Warning

    • If heavy sweating is accompanied by dizziness, chest or stomach pain, and chills, it could be a sign of something more serious like a heart attack. You need to seek immediate medical attention. [10] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source
