No one wants to see dark spots appear anywhere on their body, especially on the face. Often, dark spots form on the skin as a result of sun exposure, a condition known as hyperpigmentation. Sometimes, especially in pregnant women, the hormones can cause dark spots or patches to form on the skin, also known as melasma. Acne and scars can also be behind dark spots that persist long after pimples, scratches or cuts have gone. The good news is that most dark spots will fade, but there are some products and treatments you can use to make them fade faster.

Apply sunscreen to prevent dark spots from getting worse. Daily use of sunscreen may be the best way to prevent hyperpigmentation. Even low UV rays can accumulate and lead to dark spots. You should look for a physical sunscreen, meaning one that contains zinc oxide (zinc oxide) or itanium dioxide (titanium dioxide), which block most of the rays that can tan skin. Use a concave scar concealer to temporarily cover acne scars. Scar creams are temporary scar fillers, that is, they fill in the hollows and gaps in the skin. If you’re looking for a quick way to get rid of dark spots on your face, try applying a thin layer of concealer over your scars like makeup to fill in scars and smoothen the skin. The cream is also easy to wash off when you need to remove makeup. [20] X Research Source

Try switching to a milder skin care product if your skin is irritated. Acne or psoriasis products that are too strong can irritate or damage the skin. This can cause cells to react by producing an excess of melanin. You should choose products labeled “sensitive” or “gentle” instead of stronger products that can irritate the skin and darken it. Wash your face daily, especially at night before going to bed. [24] X Trusted Source American Academy of Dermatpogy Go to Source

  • Shop for gentle daily cleansers for sensitive skin, such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, and Ghost Democracy Transparent Gentle Exfpiating Daily Cleanser. [25] X Research Sources

Avoid using heavy cosmetics containing oil to cover dark spots. Makeup is a simple way to hide dark spots, but cosmetics can make it worse. If you still want to wear makeup, you should choose mineral cosmetics labeled non-comedogenic (do not clog pores) so that you can cover the dark spots without making the situation worse. [26] X Trusted Source American Academy of Dermatpogy Go to Source

    • Shop for non-pore-clogging cosmetics at major cosmetic stores or order them online.
  • Advice

    • If you have skin that is prone to dark spots, try to limit your sun exposure as much as possible.
    • Avoid browning the skin. UV light can create more dark spots.

    Warning

    • Do not use products that contain bleach or do not list ingredients in the product.
