Challenge yourself. This is an effective way to motivate yourself. Every time you feel like doing something will make you confident and excited but are blocked by nervousness and apprehension, then immediately challenge yourself.

Make fun of yourself. Oh, that’s right – not in a self-deprecating way but with humility and humor to admit that you’re not perfect, and you don’t worry about it either. Just let it happen, and let it go. Don’t worry too much about the causes of your embarrassment. When you feel that feeling in your heart, tell yourself that you will be okay. Pretend you’re just an observer rather than an experiencer of the sensation, and shake it out of your mind. Be like the celebrities, leaders or friends you admire; they all make mistakes but get up and move on without carrying the burden of everyone’s expectations and criticisms.

  • For Criticism: Learn to distinguish helpful, constructive criticism from people who care about you and destructive, hateful criticism from people who lack empathy, envy, or hatred. You should learn from positive criticism, and ignore negative criticism. You don’t need haters in your life and don’t let their pettiness follow you.
  • Practice responding to criticism. For petty criticisms, prepare a response in mind to skillfully respond to the situation without letting yourself be humiliated or hurt the other person. This way, you won’t get flustered and won’t be surprised. It’s thanks to a quick wit that you wouldn’t have thought while shocked by their rudeness. Think kindly and say things like:
  • “I don’t understand why you need to say that. I don’t accept being told like that.”
  • “I want you to know that I do not agree with such harsh criticism. I have tried my best and I do not accept your interpretation.

Accept that you are you, no matter how others see you. The feeling of “I am myself” is always constant. If you try to remember your childhood and think about the “me”, you will find that the “me” never changes, regardless of age and circumstances. The “I” does not depend on anything. It doesn’t grow and it doesn’t get smaller, it’s all because you have a feeling that it changes or depends on something. Consider the kind of thoughts that pop into your head while sitting or working. You need to be on the lookout if those thoughts are just what other people think of you. Direct your attention the other way. When you start to feel awkward, identify a target – whatever it is, maybe a bug crawling on the floor – and focus on that.     Clear from your mind the heartless or judgmental criticism of others. When you allow others to judge you, you also lose your happiness for others.     • Sometimes people intentionally bully you if they feel you are vulnerable in some way (this is how bullies work – find weaknesses to exploit). In this case, walk away or just don’t get involved.
