If there are multiple computers on the network, it doesn’t matter which operating system, you can shut them down remotely. If using Windows, you will need to set up the target computer to be able to shutdown remotely. Once the setup is complete, you can proceed with a remote shutdown on any computer including Linux. Mac computers can also be shut down remotely with a simple Terminal command.

Enable Remote Registry Service (Windows)

Open the Start menu on the target computer. Before shutting down any Windows computer on a remote network, you need to enable Remote Services on that computer. This requires administrator access to the computer.

Open Command Prompt on the computer. You can use the Shutdown program to manage the shutdown process of many computers on the network. The fastest way to open this program is to use the Command Prompt.

Enter the computer name. Enter the name of the computer and then click “OK” to add it to the list.

Set shutdown options. There are several options that you can set before sending the shutdown signal:

  • You can choose to shut down or restart the target computer.
  • You can warn users that their computer is about to shut down. This option is highly recommended if you know someone else is using that computer. You can adjust the display time of the notification.
  • You can add a reason and a legend at the bottom of the window. These content will be added to the log, which is important if the computer has multiple administrators or you want to review your actions later.

Find the computer’s IP address. You need to know the IP address of the target computer to be able to shut down through the Linux computer. There are several ways to determine this:

  • Open Command Prompt on the target computer and type ipconfig . Find the IPv4 address.
  • Open the router’s configuration page and find the DHCP client table. This table will show all devices connected to the network.

Open Terminal on the Linux computer. The computer running the Linux operating system must be connected to the same network as the Windows computer that you are planning to remotely shut down.

Execute remote shutdown command. Once the Samba protocol is installed, you can execute the shutdown command:

  • net rpc shutdown -I IP address -U user % password
  • Replace IP address with the target computer’s IP address (eg 192.168.1.25 )
  • Replace user with your Windows computer’s username.
  • Replace the password with your Windows computer’s user password.

Open Terminal on another Mac on the network. Terminal can be used to shut down any Mac computer that you have administrator access to on the network.
