A few specific recommendations. In LibreOffice Writer, press the F11 key again and again to toggle the list of styles on/off. To create an ePub format file, you will need to specify at a minimum the following:

  • Headings – heading style. The title of the book and the main chapters of the ePub format file should be appended with ” Heading 1 “. All chapters should be labeled with ” Heading 2 “. For subsections, select ” Heading 3 “. While LibreOffice allows writers to specify up to 9 heading styles, you should not use more than 3.
  • Body text – Body text. Your e-book text should have the style “ Text body ” in LibreOffice.
  • Monospace text – Monospace text. Some text, such as computer code, requires special formatting to maintain its space. It should be specified as “ Preformatted text ”.
  • Extended quotations – Extended quotations. Some form of writing feature block citation. They should be placed in the “ Quotes ” style.
