Principles of selection, filtering and searching
- If you start selecting a composer from the Composer set of criteria, the selected composer will be filtered by 2 sets of criteria, Instrument and Form .
- If you start selecting a performer from the Performer set of criteria, the selected performer will be filtered by all four remaining sets of criteria, namely Popular Composer ; Instruments ; Period and Form .
- If you start selecting an instrument from the Instrument set of criteria, the selected instrument will be filtered by 3 sets of criteria, namely Popular composer ; Period and Form .
- If starting to select a period from the Period , the selected period will be filtered by 3 sets of criteria, namely Popular composer ; Instruments and Forms .
- If you start to select a music form/music form from the Form set of criteria, the selected music form/music form will be filtered by 2 sets of criteria, Instrument and Period .
Practical example of selecting and filtering on MUSOPEN
- On the MUSOPEN homepage, click Music Catalog to open the Royalty Free Music page.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/d/d9/MUSOPEN-Performer-B.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Performer-B.png”,”bigUrl”:”/images /thumb/d/d9/MUSOPEN-Performer-B.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Performer-B.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:225,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:356, “licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1%BA%ABu:cc-by- sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self</a>n</p ></div>”}
- Select Borromeo String Quartet to open a page ( Borromeo String Quartet Music Recordings ) with a list of its tracks.
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/c/ce/MUSOPEN-Borromeo-List.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Borromeo-List.png”,”bigUrl”:”/images /thumb/c/ce/MUSOPEN-Borromeo-List.png/397px-MUSOPEN-Borromeo-List.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:647,”bigWidth”:398,”bigHeight”:560, “licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1%BA%ABu:cc-by- sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self</a>n</p ></div>”}
- Go to the bottom of the page, filter section, you will see there are 4 filters, from bottom to top are: (1) forms – music form/music form; (2) Periods – Period; (3) Instruments – Musical Instruments; (4) Popular composers – Famous composers. You will filter in this sort order. To get started, select the Quartet criterion from the forms filter. Immediately, you will see, from the pre-filtered list with 19 songs, now down to 16 songs.
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/9/9c/MUSOPEN-Filter-1.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Filter-1.png”,”bigUrl”:”/images /thumb/9/9c/MUSOPEN-Filter-1.png/355px-MUSOPEN-Filter-1.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:726,”bigWidth”:355,”bigHeight”:560, “licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1%BA%ABu:cc-by- sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self</a>n</p ></div>”}
- Select the Romantic criteria from the Periods filter, and you’ll instantly see a list from 16 tracks down to just 9 tracks.
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/4/48/MUSOPEN-Filter-2.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Filter-2.png”,”bigUrl”:”/images /thumb/4/48/MUSOPEN-Filter-2.png/511px-MUSOPEN-Filter-2.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:503,”bigWidth”:512,”bigHeight”:560, “licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1%BA%ABu:cc-by- sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self</a>n</p ></div>”}
- Select the String Quartet criteria from the Instruments filter, and you’ll instantly see a list from 9 tracks down to 8 tracks.
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/8/8a/MUSOPEN-Filter-3.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Filter-3.png”,”bigUrl”:”/images /thumb/8/8a/MUSOPEN-Filter-3.png/528px-MUSOPEN-Filter-3.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:487,”bigWidth”:529,”bigHeight”:560, “licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1%BA%ABu:cc-by- sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self</a>n</p ></div>”}
- Select the Ludwig van Beethoven criteria from the Popular composers filter, and you’ll instantly see a list from 8 tracks down to 3 . This is the final result of selecting and filtering using the 4 sets of criteria outlined above.
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/e/e7/MUSOPEN-Filter-4.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Filter-4.png”,”bigUrl”:”/images /thumb/e/e7/MUSOPEN-Filter-4.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Filter-4.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:322,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:510, “licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1%BA%ABu:cc-by- sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self</a>n</p ></div>”}
- The result will be the same, although the order in which the criteria are selected from the sets of criteria are different, as long as the selected criteria values are the same.
Search combined with select and filter
- The search field, by default, has the word Search… , where you’ll type in any search terms (phrases) you want to search for.
- Tiny magnifying glass icon. Clicking this icon will take you to the MUSOPEN search results screen, where you can search for combinations with criteria such as: (1) Composers ; (2) Forms ; (3) Instruments ; (4) Periods ; and even with a set of 2 sub-criteria, which are music ( music ) and music sheet ( music sheet ).
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/78/MUSOPEN-Search-Result-Screen.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Result-Screen.png”,”bigUrl” :”/images/thumb/7/78/MUSOPEN-Search-Result-Screen.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Result-Screen.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:234,”bigWidth”: 728,”bigHeight”:371,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1% BA%ABu:cc-by-sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self </a>n</p></div>”}
- Conduct a search. Let’s say you want to search for etudes (exercises) by composer Sergei Rakhmaninoff . Type in the search field the word etude and press Enter.
- Select the Early 20th century criteria from the Periods filter by further typing in the search field for that term, so that it is separated from the search term etude by a comma, you will immediately see pre-selected list and filtered from 33 tracks down to 6 tracks. Continue doing the same with:
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/2/27/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-2.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-2.png”,”bigUrl” :”/images/thumb/2/27/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-2.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-2.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:271,”bigWidth”: 728,”bigHeight”:429,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1% BA%ABu:cc-by-sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self </a>n</p></div>”}
- Select the Piano criterion from the Instrument filter, and you’ll instantly see a list from 6 tracks down to 5 tracks. At this point, you can notice in the Forms filter that there is only Etude criterion left, which means that you do not need to use this Forms filter anymore, because there is nothing to select and filter out other than Etude .
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/b/b5/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-3.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-3.png”,”bigUrl” :”/images/thumb/b/b5/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-3.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-3.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:248,”bigWidth”: 728,”bigHeight”:392,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1% BA%ABu:cc-by-sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self </a>n</p></div>”}
- Even so, you can still try to select it by continuing to type in the search field for that Etude word, so that it is separated from the search word Piano by a comma, and you will see that the list remains the same 5 song. Continue doing the same with:
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/b/b2/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-4.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-4.png”,”bigUrl” :”/images/thumb/b/b2/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-4.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-4.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:247,”bigWidth”: 728,”bigHeight”:391,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1% BA%ABu:cc-by-sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self </a>n</p></div>”}
- Select the Sergei Rachmaninoff criteria from the Composers filter, and you’ll instantly see a pre-selected list and filter from 5 tracks down to 2 tracks. This is the final result, and you get 2 tracks that match your original search query. You can download both of those songs to your device so you can listen to them at your leisure. Before downloading those 2 songs, you should check their license. See the sections below for information on checking the license and downloading the two tracks to your computer.
{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/9/9a/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-5.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-5.png”,”bigUrl” :”/images/thumb/9/9a/MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-5.png/728px-MUSOPEN-Search-Etude-5.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:245,”bigWidth”: 728,”bigHeight”:387,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”><p><a href=”/index.php?title=B%E1%BA%A3n_m%E1% BA%ABu:cc-by-sa-nc-3.0-self&redlink=1″ class=”new” title=”Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self (page chu01b0a u0111u01b0u1ee3c viu1ebft)”>Bu1ea3n_mu1eabu:cc by sa nc 3.0 self </a>n</p></div>”}
- The final result above is 2 tracks by Sergei Rachmaninoff . Now you’ll want to check to see if those 2 songs go with their respective 2 tracks so that, for example, if you want to learn, there’s also a sheet music with fine printed notes to learn from. You can check this by clicking the Sheet Music knob on the right side of the Music knob. Great, those songs are also available. Please try to check:
