Over the past 50 years, 11 Star Wars movies have been released – and that’s just the number of movies that hit theaters. Whether you’re just seeing the series for the first time, or want to re-watch the whole series in preparation for any new coming out, the question of how to watch Star Wars is always a hotly debated topic. There are 3 popular viewing orders to choose from: viewing by release date, viewing in linear chronological order, or using the Rinster method to organize movies and make them easier to understand. But remember that once you want to watch a movie, there are no rules, so choose the method you feel most comfortable with!

Watch movies in order of release for the same old-fashioned experience. If you want the authentic experience of watching movies in order of release, watch them in order of release date. This approach is considered by many Star Wars fans to be the best method, but it also has a downside. The movie style when switching from Return of the Jedi to The Phantom Menace can be frustrating, and the story is also easily confused because you’re watching out of sequence. story. [1] X Research Source

  • If you are going to watch movies with kids, this sequence will be quite difficult for them because older movies do not have modern VFX technology.

Release order:

A New Hope (Episode IV) – 1977

The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) – 1980

Attack of the Clones (Episode II) – 2002

Revenge of the Sith (Episode III) – 2005

The Force Awakens (Episode VII) – 2015

Rogue One ( A Star Wars Story ) -2016

The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) -2017

Watch the main trilogy. Starting with 1977’s A New Hope and ending with 1983’s Return of the Jedi , check out this trilogy first. These are movies that are critically acclaimed by fans and critics alike, and what better way to start the series than with the iconic Luke Skywalker. [2] X Research Source

  • There are two versions of the trilogy: the original and the 1977 remake. The remake isn’t a different story – everything stays the same from the characters to the plot – only enhanced visual effects. This can be a good choice if watched with young children, although true movie buffs are generally not welcome to remakes.

Watch the prequel trilogy after you’ve finished watching the main trilogy. After completing the Luke Skywalker saga, move on to the prequel. Start with The Phantom Menace , then watch Attack of the Clones . Conclude the prequel trilogy with Revenge of the Sith to complete the story of Darth Vader and learn about Luke’s identity. You’ll also get to see Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker when they were kids, details that are interesting if you’re interested in connecting the movies. [3] X Research Sources

  • Watching the prequel doesn’t necessarily mean that you understand what happened in the three main films, and the tone is also different from the other Star Wars movies (more silly and funny). Many adult viewers who enjoy the action and plot side often skip this prequel altogether.
  • Prequels are events that happen before the three main films, i.e. before 1977’s A New Hope. This method is a bit difficult to follow if you’ve taken a long break, because of the events at the end of the final prequel ( Revenge) . of the Sith ) will lead to the first installment of the main trilogy ( A New Hope ).

Watch in order of Disney release, including spin-offs if you want. Once you’ve finished the prequel, check out the new Disney-produced movies. Start with The Force Awakens and follow with The Last Jedi . End the series with The Rise of Skywalker . You can watch Rogue One after The Force Awakens and Spo after The Last Jedi if you want, but these two movies are called spin-offs and don’t affect the main storyline so you can skip them. [4] X Research Sources

  • The Force Awakens , The Last Jedi , and The Rise of Skywalker are collectively known as the “sequel trilogy”. They extend the story spans from the prequel and the main trilogy.
  • Rogue One and Spo are called side stories because they are both attached to the title A Star Wars Story . These are films that provide additional background and story behind the main films, but are not required to see. It’s up to your taste, though these films add insight into the Star Wars universe.

You can choose to watch movies in chronological order of events. One of the downsides of watching movies by release date is that it’s hard to keep track of the story. Because you have to watch the main trilogy, then go back to the prequel, then jump from the prequel to the sequel. To make the storyline easier to follow, rearrange the movies in the order of events that occur in linear time. [5] X Research Sources

  • Because the prequel is more humorous and bright, this is a good way to watch if young children are watching. This method also makes it easier to follow the story line, especially for younger viewers.

Linear chronological order:

The Phantom Menace (Episode I) – 1999

Attack of the Clones (Episode II) – 2002

Revenge of the Sith (Episode III) – 2005

Spo ( A Star Wars Story ) (Optional) – 2018

Rogue One ( A Star Wars Story ) (Optional) -2016

A New Hope (Episode IV) – 1977

The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) – 1980

Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) – 1983

The Force Awakens (Episode VII) – 2015

The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) -2017

The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX) – 2019

Start watching the prequel first. To watch Star Wars in a linear sequence, start with the saga of Darth Vader as a kid. Start with The Phantom Menace then Attack of the Clones next. End the prequel with Revenge of the Sith . [6] X Research Source

  • One of the limitations of this method is that you will have to deal with the prequels first, which are the movies that are rated as the worst. Critically-minded viewers may be discouraged if they watch the prequel first.

Watch Spo and Rogue One after Revenge of the Sith is over. Spo and Rogue One are up to you, but if you want to watch it, watch it after Revenge of the Sith . They provide interesting backstories about some of the key characters in the three main films, and are rated as good. But if you skip it, you won’t break the story line. [7] X Research Sources

  • Rogue One is largely about the birth of the Death Star and the Empire’s first steps in the conquest of the universe. Spo is the story of Han Spo, and you’ll also learn more about Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, as well as the Millennium Falcon.

Watch the main trilogy after watching the prequel and side story. Once you’ve finished the prequel, and whether you’ve watched the side story or skipped it, let’s start watching the main trilogy. A New Hope follows the end of Revenge of the Sith , so it’s easy to identify key characters, understand their motivations, and follow the events revealed in the story. [8] X Research Sources

  • The plus point of this method is that the Empire’s violent behavior at the beginning of A New Hope seems easier to understand.
  • Unfortunately, the unexpected development at the end of The Empire Strikes Back will no longer be a surprise because it has been clearly explained in the prequel. This can be seen as the most limited point of the linear view method.

Watch Disney sequels released to catch up on the latest events. Conclude your experience by watching the three sequels. Check out The Force Awakens , The Last Jedi , and The Rise of Skywalker to wrap up the Star Wars franchise. [9] X Research Source

  • The events of the three sequels may contain multiple allusions to details from the three main films, with many characters from the main trilogy also appearing in the sequel.

Choose the Rinster method to enhance the impact of Return of the Jedi . The order of Rinster is named after the fan who came up with this viewing – Ernest Rinster. The goal of this view is to preserve the surprise of The Empire Strikes Back ending. Basically, you start with the first 2 seasons of the main trilogy, then watch all the prequels before seeing the end of the main trilogy. This ordering can be seen as a mix of linear and date-based viewing, where the prequels are seen as long flashbacks before the end of the main trilogy. [10] X Research Source

  • For loyal Star Wars fans, this is the best viewing method because it reduces the role of prequels to just flashbacks. This also preserves a clear storyline while increasing the emotion of the final film in the main trilogy. It also increases the emotional impact of Return of the Jedi because you get to spend time with the story of Vader’s youth.

Rinster Order:

A New Hope (Episode IV) – 1977

The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) – 1980

The Phantom Menace (Episode I) (Optional for machete method) – 1999

Attack of the Clones (Episode II) – 2002

Revenge of the Sith (Episode III) – 2005

Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) – 1983

The Force Awakens (Episode VII) – 2015

The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) -2017

The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX) – 2019

Insert the prequel before concluding the main trilogy with Return of the Jedi . After watching The Empire Strikes Back , switch to watching the prequel. Check out The Phantom Menace , Attack of the Clones , and Revenge of the Sith . The Empire Strikes Back ends with a big reveal about the relationship between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, and the prequel is about Darth Vader’s youth and his corrupt path to becoming the bad guy, so you will get to know more about Vader and Luke after watching Return of the Jedi ! [12] X Research Source

  • Because Return of the Jedi ends right at the climax of the main trilogy, you should watch the prequel first to give yourself time to get a sense of what’s going on before returning to the main trilogy.

Watch current Disney movies, save Rogue One and Spo for later. Complete the sequel trilogy, which follows the story of Rey, Kylo Ren, and Finn – new characters who are the spiritual descendants of Luke, Vader, and Han Spo. Many characters from the main trilogy appear in this sequel, you will have nostalgic moments watching how these characters grow and age! Save Rogue One and Spo for later. [13] X Research Source

  • With the order of Rinster, Rogue One and Spo are just side stories unrelated to the main storyline. This helps the viewing order to follow the movie’s purpose, anyway Rogue One and Spo are not related to the core of the series.

Tuck Rogue One between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back to see more of the story behind. Whether you watch it in linear time or Rinster, you can still watch Rogue One after A New Hope and before The Empire Strikes Back if you like. Rogue One provides a series of Death Star contexts and the nature of the Rebel Alliance’s motives in its fight against the Empire, which enriches the experience for The Empire Strikes Back . [14] X Research Source

  • The nature of the confrontation between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire is not clearly explained in the main films. The Empire is only seen as the bad side while the Rebel Alliance is the good side. Rogue One provides a wealth of information as to why these two organizations are so antagonistic to each other in the first place.

Watch Rogue One and Spo before watching the main trilogy to get a sense of the setting. Whether you watch in linear time or the Rinster method, you can watch these two movies first. This way, you get to know a lot of the stories behind the main trilogy, and don’t break any knots or reveal important details since the two movies don’t relate to the core storylines. Get rid of The Phantom Menace and then follow the Rinster method. This method is also known as the “machete method” because it cuts the part that fans consider the worst. This is also a good choice if you want to follow the flow of the story, as The Phantom Menace also doesn’t have much information that is very important to the story and most of the events don’t have long-lasting consequences. • The Phantom Menace is pleasing to the eye, but the story has been criticized as boring and silly. If you like action and cool footage, this is not a bad experience.

Watch the prequel in last order and pretend it’s a flashback. Many loyal fans hate all prequels, and always choose to watch them last to keep the tone, story, and pacing of the main trio unified. You can also choose to skip it if it doesn’t feel right. [17] X Research Source

Tip: Don’t disparage the prequel just for the sake of listening to other people’s opinions. There are many people who still love these movies and you can be one of them. If you haven’t seen it, try The Phantom Menace , if after 1 hour you find nothing attractive, you can skip it.

  • Advice

    • If you want to watch the famous animated show Clone Wars (War with Clones), then watch them in person after completing the second part of the prequel, which is also titled The Clone Wars . This way will maximize the context for Revenge of the Sith . This TV show has gone through 6 seasons, so make sure you have enough time to watch it.
    • New Disney-produced movies are streaming online. You’ll have to rent other movies if you don’t own any.
